Why do employees choose mobile data Internet over office based Internet?

The world of mobile data internet is changing rapidly and it can be tough to stay on top of the ever evolving ways people use this powerful resource and the negative impact this could be having on your business. Sure there are huge positives to an open Internet access policy in the workplace, but many businesses choose to control access to inappropriate services for obvious reasons when employees are on company networks using company provided computers.

And then your employee picks up their mobile device because…

1.       They have faster access using LTE - Cellular networks are often faster than the office network for accessing social media and streaming video services.

2.       There is no browsing history - Most employees assume the office network is monitored and their activity is logged. They will often revert to mobile devices to hide their activities from their employer.

3.       They can beat the office Internet restrictions - If you really want to get to that site that is blocked on the internal office network the quickest way to do this is pick up your mobile device and browse unrestricted.

There is a gaping hole in most corporate IT policies when it comes to mobility, it can be an overlooked or very difficult to plug gap. The harsh reality is that while the office Internet connection provides unlimited data usage and poses no financial risk in terms of overages it is controlled while the mobility connection, which can be a financial nightmare in the wrong hands, often goes unrestricted.

There are many reasons a business owner or manager should not want an employee choosing their wireless connection as a soft option, from security and compliance to obvious productivity concerns, but if you just need one reason it is financial exposure.

Don’t wait for it to happen, extend the same controls you have on your office Internet connection to all of your mobile devices today, ask your AT&T account manager about AccessMyLAN From AT&T  www.att.com/accessmylan

Great article!

Interesting article Dylan. I find myself turning my Wifi off on the train these days. Mobile data internet is so much faster, and a hellofa lot less frustrating! (But I can monitor my use because I have the Asavie TechnologiesModa app)
