Why Do Contact Lenses Fail?
In this day and age when we have evolved from making contact lenses virtually on a one by one basis by hand to the mass production of daily disposable lenses we still have a failure rate of 75% in the long term.
In summary it is because of a few main reasons:
-
Not using a new lens every day
Many patients are lucky enough to be able to use a new lens every day for under a dollar a day. Many either choose not to or are not advise to by their optometrist because it is perceived as too expensive.
-
Do not use preserved cleaning solutions if you are not suitable for a daily disposable
Up to 40% of patients need fitting in a more customised product. This type of lens is best cleaned with hydrogen peroxide, which when neutralised is preservative free - ask your optometrist about this.
-
Do Not Sleep in your Contact Lenses
Do you need to see your dreams clearer? The reality is that serious contact lens complications occur 20 times more frequently when patients sleep in their contact lenses.
-
Eye Allergies and Dry Eyes need attention
Approximately 80% of the population will suffer from either or both of these conditions. They are major causes of failure that are often simmering away with no advice or treatment.
-
Listen to Your Optometrist
It is a fact that compliance is very low with contact lens use. Up to 80% of contact lens wearers do something that is counter productive to long term success.
