Why DIY Legal Documents Won’t Work for Your Business

It’s pretty amazing to think of all the things we do online today that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. But just because you can do something online doesn’t necessarily mean that is the best option. Despite the convenience associated with completing tasks online, fulfilling your company’s legal needs with an online service may not be the best available option.
Here are three reasons why do-it-yourself legal documents will not always work for your business:
One size does NOT fit all. Legal documents that are downloaded from legal form websites are essentially “one size fits all”. And your business is not like every other business out there. You undoubtedly have essential business needs that require specific provisions, clauses or amendments that are different than standard-issue contracts or other legal forms available online. Standard forms found online will also not provide you with the protections you need for your specific company.
The devil is in the details. When it comes to legal agreements, details matter. Even the smallest, seemingly innocuous detail left out of an agreement can come back to haunt you in the form of litigation or penalties. Not knowing what details should be included or where to look, you can’t prevent small errors that could potentially cost big bucks in the future.
Good legal advice can be priceless. Experienced business attorneys not only know what to look for now, they can also foresee potential problems that could create havoc for your company. A good business lawyer can save you time and money by providing solutions that will protect your business and keep you in compliance. Plus, by fostering a relationship with a real, live attorney, you have someone looking out for you who understands your business and can advise you no matter what type of need arises.
While it may be tempting for business owners to resort to online legal resources for their business’s legal needs — often because they may believe that it will save them time and money — relying on DIY agreements to lay the legal foundation for a business can be disastrous in the long run.
Florida business owners can avoid unnecessary risk by consulting with a qualified Florida business attorney to draft and review contracts and agreements. Contact one of the experienced Florida business attorneys at Jurado & Farshchian, P.L., at (305) 921-0440, or email us at [email protected].

8 年Totally excellent article! People are funny about legal services. They feel that legal advice is an entitlement that should be at little to no cost to them. I'd bet anything these people use LegalZoom, etc. to the hilt or simply find forms online and use them. As a paralegal I fielded so many calls from people who would ask ME for legal advice. I would respond that I could not advise them but the attorney could. Invariably they would reply with, "I don't want to see an attorney; I want YOUR advice." I am sure these same people would never ask a doctor's office for free medical advice.
