Why is it Difficult Being a Hotel Manager?

Becoming a Hotel Manager for the first time - whether you are responsible for one person or a whole Large Hotel – can be a big change, and there are some issues you might not have considered.

Here are some examples of issues which no one might have told you about considering before moving from an employee to becoming a Hotel Manager.  Here are five specific difficult situations you need to be ready for:

I must be willing and able to Terminate an Underperforming Hotel Employee

If your member of staff is not meeting your expectations, it is your responsibility to let them know immediately - not months later. If you have done a good job providing expectations, correcting an employee when they do not meet these expectations, and giving them opportunities to regain your trust, then the termination process becomes much easier.

I must be Strong Enough to Support a Grieving Employee

When you first learn of your employee’s loss, perhaps send a sympathy gift to their home with a note that lets your employee know that you are thinking about them. Encourage your employee to forget about all work-related responsibilities for the next few days and give them time to mourn. After a few days have passed, you can begin to encourage a gradual return to the Hotel. After the return to work, be vigilant of their behaviour.

I must be Able to Handle Conflict Between Multiple Employees

Few things are more frustrating than conflict between Hotel employees. Not only does conflict impact productivity, but it also threatens to compromise the healthy Hotel culture. While you should not feel the need to immediately control every conflict, there does become a point where a Hotel Manager needs to get involved. Maybe it is through good listening that you will understand any matter and settle each conflict.

I must be able to Deal with a Dishonest Employee at the Hotel

A dishonest employee may be someone who physically steals from the Hotel (taking cash, products, or supplies), commits intellectual theft (taking ideas away from the Hotel), or misleads Hotel Management (cheating on a resume, lying about hours worked, etc.). When you notice dishonest behaviour, you must act decisively. Step up, implement the appropriate reprimand, and move on. Employees learn through such experience.

I must be strong enough to Persuade an Employee to Stay

It is often difficult to retain an employee who is looking to accept a position with another Hotel. While you cannot do much if an employee wants to switch careers, you have some room for negotiation when it comes to money, benefits, and responsibilities. You may even have some options when it comes to relocation. Negotiation skills are a must.

Learn from These Challenges

It does not matter how good your Hotel is - the only way to be successful on a large scale during a Hotel Manager career is by involving people. And when you involve people, you can be sure they are going to present to you some Hotel Management challenges that are uncomfortable, troubling, and stressful.

Anticipate major challenges, never avoid them, and learn from your Hotel Manager successes and failures. By letting your People challenges shape your management style, you will eventually grow into a better Hotel Manager who can handle a variety of situations more confidently and effectively.

Think about it.
