Why Didn’t I Do This Sooner?

How the Technique of Future Casting Can Get You into Action

We’ve all been there—feeling that lingering sense of regret after finally starting something new, only to realize how much we’ve missed out on. The classic question creeps in: “Why didn’t I do this sooner?” Whether it’s a new hobby, a professional endeavor, or even a lifestyle change, there’s often that nagging thought that we should have started ages ago. But what if there was a way to kickstart those ideas and put them into action now, so you don’t look back with that same question in a few years? Enter the powerful technique of future casting.

The Power of Future Casting

Future casting is all about visualizing a desired future outcome and creating a detailed plan to achieve it. It’s a way to project yourself into the future and ask, “If I were to start this today, how would my life look a year from now?” By mapping out your vision and the steps to get there, you can break free from the comfort zone and turn ideas into reality.

Let me share a personal example that has been brewing in my mind for years: learning to play golf.

My Journey from Tennis Courts to Golf Courses

For the last few years, I’ve been toying with the idea of adding golf into my learning journey. As an avid and tenured tennis player, I naturally default to what I know and love—hitting the courts, feeling the rush of a well-placed shot, and relishing the sport I’ve mastered over the years. But as life has moved forward, I’ve realized that I’m at a stage where golf, quite literally, is in my front yard. The opportunity to pick up this new skill is right at my doorstep.

Yet, despite the accessibility and appeal, I kept putting it off. Why? Because like many of us, I chose the familiar over the unknown. I was comfortable with tennis, and golf felt like a challenge I wasn’t quite ready to tackle. But I knew that if I didn’t take action, I’d find myself a year from now asking, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”

So, I decided it was time to future cast. Here’s how I turned my intention into action:

  1. I Got the Gear: First, I committed by getting a set of golf clubs. There’s something powerful about taking a tangible step toward a goal. The moment those clubs were in my hands, it felt real.
  2. I Made a Learning Plan: Next, I planned a sequence of consecutive lessons—the walking kind, as I learn best when I’m hands-on and active.
  3. I Found My Tribe: Finally, I committed to joining the Ladies 9-Holer group. Having a community of like-minded learners adds accountability and makes the journey more enjoyable.

This approach shifted me from simply thinking about golf to actively stepping into it. The process of future casting turned a dream into a reality by giving me a clear path forward.

How You Can Future Cast Your Next Move

What’s that one thing you’ve been considering but haven’t taken the leap on? Maybe it’s a professional goal like launching a new product or service, or perhaps it’s a personal aspiration like learning a new language or skill. The key is to start with something that’s been brewing in your mind for a while—or a new idea you’re super excited about.

Here’s How to Future Cast and Get into Action:

  1. Visualize the Outcome Close your eyes and imagine where you want to be a year from now. Picture the benefits, the joy, the fulfillment of having accomplished that goal. Ask yourself, “How will I feel if I don’t start this now?”
  2. Create a Plan with First Steps Just like I got my golf clubs, what’s the first tangible step you can take? Invest in that course, book that meeting, buy the equipment—whatever it is, take that initial leap.
  3. Set a Sequence of Actions Break your goal into manageable steps. Whether it’s scheduling lessons, setting up regular meetings, or blocking time on your calendar, create a sequence that keeps you moving forward.
  4. Find Accountability Commit to a group, a mentor, or a friend who will hold you accountable. Sharing your journey with others can be a powerful motivator.
  5. Embrace the Process Remember, it’s not just about the end goal; it’s about the journey. As you take action, celebrate the small wins along the way.

Don’t Let Another Year Pass You By

Imagine a future where you’ve already accomplished that goal that’s been lingering in your mind. You’ll look back and thank yourself for taking action instead of asking, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”

So, what do you need to future cast today? Is it a personal learning experience or a professional leap? There are so many opportunities waiting for you—pick one and commit! You’ve got this. Future cast, take action, and avoid the age-old question.
