Why didn't Bill Gates support Musk and Wozniak on AI?

At the end of March, Musk, Wozniak, and more than 1,000 other representatives and experts in the IT industry called for a suspension of advanced AI training for six months until common security protocols appeared. Gates says it won't solve the problem.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates did not support the call to suspend the development of advanced AI, which was made by businessman Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and more than 1,000 industry experts.

"I don't think asking one particular group to pause will solve the problems," Gates said in an interview with Reuters. Technology has huge advantages, and instead of pausing its development, it is worth focusing on how best to use developments in the field of artificial intelligence, he said. Also, according to Gates, you need to "identify areas of risk."

Commenting on the call of experts, the businessman said that he did not understand how it could be implemented. He also doubted that all countries would be ready to suspend research.

An open letter from experts and representatives of the IT industry was published at the end of March. The authors warned that AI systems with human-like intelligence could pose a danger to society, and questioned whether humans should "risk losing control of civilization." They called on all AI labs to stop training systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months until common security protocols are created; the appeal stated that if this could not be done quickly, the authorities "should intervene and impose a moratorium".

Musk, who signed the appeal, recalled the anecdote about agnostic technologists who developed artificial superintelligence to find out if there is a God. When they asked this question, the AI replied, "Now there is."

Gates at the end of March published an article "The Age of AI has begun", in which he outlined his vision for the future of artificial intelligence. The businessman called it a revolutionary achievement in the field of technology, noting that innovative technologies will be able to change the work of entire industries, including agriculture, education and healthcare, but drew attention to the numerous risks associated with neural networks. In particular, Gates said that with the development of technology, the risk of a threat from people "armed with artificial intelligence" increases.
