Why did I write Politically Incorrect Children's Stories?

I have two children and when small, they needed bedtime stories. And the goons, they wanted original stories. In a fit of stupidity, I decided I would dream up the stories myself. Little did I realize what I was letting myself in for.

These are stories made on the fly, in the sublime-anxious state of mind that can only be generated by:

  • A small child on each side
  •  Inside a warm quilt
  • Winter or air conditioner delivered - super cold
  • Hard expectations of a corking good tale coming up.
  • The promise of my sleep based on the success of the story!

Many tales fell by the way. Critiques included poor structure, laziness in setting up the plot, too cootchie-pootchie, not funny enough. This critiquing business was taken up with so much zeal that there are times when one spent the whole day dreading story time!!!!

On the flip side, the successful stories were so well received that the audience didn’t go to sleep but demanded another. One was torn between the glow of critical acclaim and the pain of generating a new story.

These are not FMCG tales that tax no faculty. These demand serious listening, contain unfamiliar words, concepts and contexts and constitute learning constructs outside just the tale. They are templates for learning. Hell, I learned so much. They are real, contemporary and hard. No sissy poo stuff, no pussyfooting. Children are extremely sophisticated customers, they can be.

There is a regular cast of characters and ‘scapes’ who are summoned at various times to lend depth and flavor

  • Bila sometimes Bilan, a Boy
  • Kabun, a Girl
  • Kolaa Raoo, Management expert
  • Mr. Morkley, A dog that walked into Kabun's house and then called it home! It is not clear whether Kabun adopted Mr. Morkley or vice versa.
  • PICS Dad, The Politically Incorrect Children’s, Story-monger
  • Ancientben – Hoarypast-Sethji Malikji School. A hypothetical school with a name similar to the archetype. Named after an ancestor known only to the school patriarch.

These stories were really told to Bila and Kabun… Promise, ask them. They have now grown up and are making up their own stories. They do not need these anymore. Thanks for wanting them.
