Why Did The Arrest of Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate Happen?

In a recent turn of events, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief, in connection with the liquor policy case. This move comes after Mr Kejriwal skipped the ED's summons on nine occasions, leading to increased speculation about his arrest.

The ED's allegations revolve around Mr Kejriwal being labelled as a "conspirator" in the case. According to the ED's findings, there was an alleged conspiracy involving Mr Kejriwal, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha, and AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh in framing a now-scrapped liquor policy. This policy was purportedly designed to benefit a liquor lobby from southern India, referred to as the "South Lobby."

In exchange for these favourable policies, the "South Lobby" was supposed to provide a significant sum of ?100 crores to the AAP. The ED's investigation has revealed statements from accused individuals and witnesses linking Mr Kejriwal to these activities. Vijay Nair, an accused in the case, was reported to frequently visit Mr Kejriwal's office and discuss the policy, further strengthening the ED's case.

Additionally, Raghav Magunta, a witness in the "South Lobby" case, stated that his father, a YSR Congress Party MP, met Mr Kejriwal to gain insights into the liquor policy. These revelations have raised serious questions about the transparency and ethical standards in policymaking.

Mr Sisodia's former secretary, C Arvind, also contributed to the unfolding narrative by disclosing discrepancies in the policymaking process, highlighting a lack of proper discussions and transparency.
