Why Developing the Young Workforce is Building the Workforce of Tomorrow.

Enigma Industrial Services Leads the Charge in Investing in the Next Generation.

The scaffolding industry, a vital component of construction and maintenance projects across the UK, faces a critical challenge: an ageing workforce and a skills gap that threatens to undermine its future. Enigma Industrial Services (Enigma-IS), a forward-thinking company, has recognised the immense potential of providing young people with work experience, which offers a unique blend of hands-on experience and structured training, providing a pathway for young people to gain valuable knowledge, skills, and experience within the construction industry. This approach attracts enthusiastic fresh talent and potentially moulds adaptable young people who can thrive in an ever-evolving industry.

During early 2024, at the request of Deputy Head Carrie Thomson, Enigma Industrial Services collaborated with Liberton High School, Edinburgh EH17 7PT, Stuart Burns DYW (Developing the Young Workforce) Coordinator, Communities and Families, and The City of Edinburgh Council, to develop the Liberton High School Construction Career Pathway programme; for ten young people, which was launched on the 10th of September 2024 and culminates on the 18th of March 2025. The programme is aimed at inspiring young people into the construction industry.?

The Construction Career Pathway programme consists of several modules provided monthly and are all developed to explore the construction industry, its stakeholders, legislative requirements, and aimed at increasing young people's career awareness and skills development. By learning alongside experienced professionals, young people will gain a deeper understanding of the industry's best practices and safety protocols. This immersive learning environment fosters a sense of camaraderie and mentorship, empowering young people to develop their problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and technical expertise, which increases and strengthens young people's Enigma-IS engagement.? The final module evaluated the Construction Career Pathway programme to identify areas for improvement, learning certificate awards, and the development of a draft Curriculum Vitae, reflecting the outcomes of the programme.

In summary, the main aim was to ensure the work experience was of value. Not purely the quality of the work experience, but the reflection on the skills developed by the individuals, which is recorded in the programme workbook after each module; the reflections culminated in a section for the student to discuss with their families and record the feedback. The journey continues.
