Why Is Data Centre Maintenance So Important?

Data centre maintenance is essential to keep all data stored secure and safe. Any downtime can cause significant losses for any company whether its financial loss, reputation and loss of customers. This makes it essential to make sure your data centre is properly maintained to ensure a constant up time. A key part of any business’s facility processes should be their data centre maintenance, as poor maintenance is the second most likely cause of downtime. Poor capacity management is the most likely cause of downtime, which can be mitigated by good data centre design, however, this can’t make up for proper maintenance and upkeep.

The requirements of a data centre are often pushed back due to the daily demands that seem more urgent. This easy to do while everything is working well – But, the longer you ignore your data centre’s maintenance needs, the more it will affect its performance and the more likely downtime will occur. It is estimated that up to 40% of system failures could have been prevented by data centre preventative maintenance.

At INFINITI we take pride in our maintenance services and to help keep your data centre running to its full potential it is important to follow the four P's;

Prevention

Ensure that there is not only a maintenance plan in place, but make sure workers follow procedures completely. For instance, alarms and CCTV should be checked every year. The UPS systems should be serviced annually along with impedance testing on batteries, and any generator needs to be looked at least once annually. Your fire suppression system needs to be serviced twice a year including an integrity test once a year. Last but not least, your air conditioning should be checked at least four times a year.

Protection

Security is critical for data centres and is of equal importance as maintenance. Make sure all staff are trained and aware of the procedures and that the health and safety documentation is always up to date. Ensure cables are tidy so avoid tripping hazards and cordon off any damaged floor tiles to avoid injuries.

Procedures

A data centre maintenance plan lets all workers know when and what your data requires whether it’s a service, cleaning or upgrade. Following the right procedures will both extend your data centres life and lower the chances of downtime.

Purity

Studies have shown that 75% if failures in hardware is caused by dust and dirty – these are almost unnoticeable but can cause untold damage and disrupt your working data centre. Ensure to keep your data centre clean!
