Why Customers Use Internet-Based TV Services

People are drawn to internet-based services for many reasons. As the landscape of television continues to change and expand, consumers are increasingly resorting to services that do not require a cable cord. Digitalsmiths performed a survey of Over-the-top TV customers — customers who use internet-based television — and found the most popular reasons consumers use internet-based services.

Being able to access internet-based services via multiple device types — like a tablet, smartphone or laptop — is a major attraction for consumers in addition to the following reasons:

Convenience - Internet-based services are extremely convenient for consumers. They don’t need to negotiate packages and rates, and they don’t even need a technician to come set up the service! It’s a simple, straightforward process. The interface applications are typically available on many platforms and there’s no denying the convenience of that. Also, internet platforms rarely require difficult-to-install hardware, which is a major plus.

  • Price - With most internet-based services costing between $5 and $25 per month, it’s hard to deny the affordability they provide. Saving money is a good thing, and these services definitely provide an affordable option to customers.
  • Ability to watch certain TV shows and whole seasons - Ever since binge watching became a “thing,” consumers can’t get enough of having access to an entire television series. They like being able to roll from one episode, to the next, to the next, seamlessly, without interruption. It’s also a pull for consumers because they can watch seasons of TV shows that have long since been cancelled. There’s nothing like pulling up all seasons of “Friends” and watching from the beginning.
  • Better selection - Since internet-based services are like a library of sorts, it’s very attractive to consumers. They can watch what they want, when they want, without having to wait for it to come on air, or having to DVR the show. The internet also boasts a large quantity of programs, making it easy to gain access to many different types of programs. Between movies, TV shows, documentaries and foreign films, there’s something for everyone!
  • Ease of finding what you want- Internet-based services have more user-friendly interfaces than cable-based services. They’re aesthetically pleasing unlike channel-flipping on cable, which certainly is not. Consumers are visual and being able to see the content they are choosing to watch is a major draw to internet-based services.
