Why Curiosity Matters

Earlier this week, I learned someone disconnected from me on LinkedIn.

Or so I thought.

I emailed to be curious about what happened.

Was it something on my end? Was it a comment or a post?

This was the exact email I got on Tuesday, August 30th:

"Hi Craig!

Thanks for reaching out, I don’t think we’re disconnected! I certainly didn’t disconnect with you. I did however put my LinkedIn in hibernation mode since last Thursday. Maybe that’s why it seems like we’re disconnected?

How are you? I hope all is well on your end!"

It was the first time I learned that my friend was on Hibernation Mode.

For those who don't know, Hibernation Mode is a way to be absent on LinkedIn when you are away for a while. The same way a bear hibernates for the winter.

Your profile won’t be visible to anyone, even your connections.

Messages, your posts, and comments will remain, but you’ll only be known as “A LinkedIn member”.

This explains why I saw "LinkedIn Member" in my messages.

By the way, she's okay. She confirmed this when I started to write my next slide deck or what I would call a Craig Deck or a Craig-a-Sell:

"That’s awesome!! Good luck with the write up! I’ll be sure to take a look when I come back on and leave a value-driven comment as well. :)"

Here are two lessons on why curiosity matters:

Lesson #1: To learn something new.

If I never emailed my friend, I wouldn't have learned.

The moment she mentioned "Hibernation Mode", I went on Quora and got educated.

Be curious to learn, grow, and improve.

Lesson #2: To ask questions and get the answers you need.

Ever heard of the quote: "If you don't ask, the answer is always no?"

To ask questions is to create curiosity and show humility.

Here are some questions you can ask:

  • "Out of curiosity..."
  • "One second. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you get to that answer?"
  • "Walk me through your thought process. How did you come up with that?"

Curiosity helps you in life to ask more questions and learn more.

What else did I miss about curiosity?

Thanks Craig for the article. My motto is "Always Be Learning". Having a curious mindset allows us to grow with knowledge and wisdom. And yeah...now I have learnt what a "hibernation mode" is on LinkedIn!

Curiosity-a strong desire to know or learn something. Naturally we’re all curious but really it’s a skill worth mastering.
