Why Cultural Potlucks at Work Are a Waste of Time! Here’s What Matters! Diversity Without the Bullsh*t.

Diversity. A word so overused in corporate boardrooms, marketing campaigns, and social media slogans that it’s beginning to lose its meaning. “Ad hoc culinary weeks.” “Diversity seminars.” “Token hires.” We’re drowning in shallow gestures designed to check a box, spark applause, and let everyone feel good about themselves without making a single meaningful change.

?But here’s the uncomfortable truth: we don’t need more buzzwords or initiatives. We need to talk and take action about what’s really going on—deep down, in our beliefs, our habits, our upbringing, and the ways we see each other.

So let’s have the real conversation. No fluff. No Instagrammable moments. Just human beings, sitting across from one another, practicing the kind of honest, courageous self-reflection that doesn’t come with a certificate of completion.

?

The Illusion of Progress

Hiring a handful of bicultural colleagues and calling it a day isn’t progress. Neither is putting on a seminar to “celebrate diversity” once a year. These actions might make us feel like we’ve done something, but they’re not the solution—they’re distractions. Performative moves allow companies and individuals to pat themselves on the back while avoiding the deeper work of transformation.

True change doesn’t come from policies alone. It comes from how we, as human beings, show up every single day. It requires us to look in the mirror and ask:

  • ?How was I taught to see people who don’t look, sound, or live like me?
  • What patterns have I inherited that I may not even be aware of?
  • Am I capable of really listening to someone who challenges my worldview?
  • Do I surround myself with people who push me to grow, or do I stay comfortable in my echo chamber?

These are not easy questions. They’re not meant to be. But without them, no amount of diversity-themed potlucks or webinars will move the needle.

One of the most overlooked, undervalued skills in creating meaningful changes is the ability to listen without judgment, without interruption, and without filtering someone’s words through your own biases. This means letting go of the urge to defend, explain, or “fix” what the other person is saying.

?Ask yourself:

  • ?When someone shares their experience, do you truly hear them—or do you start planning your response?
  • Are you more invested in appearing open-minded than in actually understanding?
  • Can you listen to someone whose views make you uncomfortable, and sit with that discomfort without running away?
  • Listening isn’t just about being polite; it’s about breaking down barriers. When you truly hear another human being—when you make space for their story, their pain, their perspective—you create the foundation for connection. Connection and powerful action drive real change.

?

From Talking Points to Action

We’re good at talking about diversity. But are we living it?

Diversity isn’t a destination; it’s a way of being. It’s woven into the small, everyday decisions we make:

  • Who do you hire, not just because they’re “diverse,” but because you genuinely believe in their value and perspective?
  • How do you build teams where differences aren’t just tolerated but celebrated and leveraged?
  • Are you willing to challenge others (and yourself) when you notice exclusionary behavior, even when it’s uncomfortable?
  • What are you doing—personally, not just professionally—to build bridges and confront your own biases?

These aren’t just corporate goals. They’re personal challenges. If we’re serious about creating a more inclusive future, we need to stop waiting for someone else to lead the charge. Leadership isn’t about your title; it’s about how you show up in every room you walk into.

The Power of Self-Leadership

The real work of diversity starts within. It starts with practicing self-leadership:

  • Be brutally honest with yourself. What are your blind spots? What assumptions do you make about people who are different from you? Where do you need to grow?
  • Commit to meaningful connections. This means building relationships that go beyond the surface. Learn from people whose lives are nothing like yours. Seek to understand, not to validate your own beliefs.
  • Embrace discomfort. Growth doesn’t happen in your comfort zone. Lean into the hard conversations. Acknowledge your mistakes. Keep learning.
  • Ask yourself: What kind of world am I creating? Every interaction and every decision contributes to the culture around you. Are you building walls or tearing them down?

A Call to Action: What’s Your Contribution?

The world doesn’t need more empty promises or hollow gestures. It needs you—your leadership, your courage, your willingness to have real conversations and take real action.

?

So here’s the challenge:

  • Stop relying on programs and policies to fix what’s broken.
  • Start having the tough, human conversations that will change hearts and make a real impact, not just policies.
  • Commit to being a leader—not because it’s trendy, but because it’s the right thing to do.

Because the truth is, diversity isn’t about looking good or sounding progressive. It’s about building a future where every human being has the chance to thrive. And that future starts with us—not the person next to us, not the CEO, not the HR department. Us!

So ask yourself: What’s your contribution? And are you ready to make it?

Let’s get to work.
