Why is corporate compliance so reactionary?

Why is corporate compliance so reactionary?

Compliance is never a problem until it is. That is usually the modus operandi for organizations moving into the public space. Zoom as a company was no different as the world moved into the early stages of the pandemic. Now, I’m not here to rain on the Zoom parade. To the contrary, I don’t think there is a single technology (save Evizone secure messaging), that I have used more in the last year.

Zoom quickly elevated itself as an essential working tool and seemingly never looked back…or did it? While Zoom’s popularity exploded, so did concerns over its security features as many regulated industries opted for other solutions as instances of “Zoombombing” became prevalent. For those unfamiliar with the term, a “Zoombomb” is when someone enters a meeting that they were previously not given access to. Not only were there intellectual property risks with having unwanted ears privy to internal meetings, but ill-willers and mischief-makers were also sharing hate speech in team meetings. This prompted a probe into how secure as a service Zoom really was.

Over the course of the last year, however, Zoom has silently and deliberately implemented a compliance team to ensure that these issues no longer occur in their system. The way we have learned to adapt professionally has also exposed a security weakness that most enterprises will need to address at some point in the future. Simply because we are so network-dependant, companies were placed at the mercy of Zoom’s own security risks, meaning that proprietary intellectual property was now being protected by the unknowns surrounding Zoom’s independent technology. Zoom quickly became a noticeable risk for regulated industries despite its surge in popularity. So taking security and compliance seriously turned out to be the only practical way of moving forward for Zoom and demonstrated that compliance, when left as an afterthought, ends up being a significant Achilles’ heel.

The message we try to convey at Evizone is that compliance should be a by-product of the solution you pay for. We have carefully built Evizone Secure Messaging (ESM) and Evizone Communication Governance (ECG) to be flexible for your everyday communication needs, but also offer the security your enterprise should have in place from the start. Feel free to reach out to me to discuss our products or just to discuss current compliance practices in the workplace. Look forward to hearing from you!
