Why Consistency is KEY When It Comes to Skincare

Trends and fads come and go, but some things should stay the same, especially when it comes to your skincare regimen. I agree that skincare product trial and error is to be expected. You may go through trying out several different face cleansers, toners, lotions, creams, serums, exfoliants, and masks before you find the ones that best enhance your skin. After that, consistency is key when it comes to skincare effectiveness.
I hear some people who complain about their skin’s results yet are very inconsistent or lazy when it comes to using their products. It’s either inconsistency or they have unrealistic expectations and are very impatient when it comes to real results. Unfortunately, because of technology (lighting, cameras, photo shop, filters, etc.), some people have unrealistic expectations of what skincare and even makeup can do for skin. You can absolutely get fantastic results from a consistent skincare regimen using safe and effective products. You can lighten age spots, diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles, get rid of redness, and acne. You can have glowing, pretty, healthy skin BUT what you can’t do is look photo shopped in person. Not even the models on the covers of magazines and in magazine ads look that way in person. You and your skin will look beautiful and healthy, just not fake. Having a good, consistent skincare regimen will also help your makeup look better. You will require less foundation, if any, or your foundation will look like it is your skin and not sitting on top of your skin and chalky-looking. Skincare, proper nutrition, water, and exercise can all help your skin feel and look your best, but have realistic expectations.
Taking care of your skin is a lot like starting a diet. If you only follow your diet “sometimes” and expect to lose weight, it’s probably not going to happen. The same goes with taking care of your skin. If you’re 40 years old, it took you 40 years for your skin to show it’s signs of aging, sun damage, etc. and nothing will repair that damage overnight. You have to use quality, safe, and effective products consistently in order to get results.
The Cake Baking and Skincare Analogy
Can you use just one or two products inconsistently from a skincare regimen?
The answer is yes you can...BUT…would you make a great cake by altering the ingredients? Think of using a skincare regimen like baking a cake. Would you make a cake and skip the flour? Or not use sugar? How about skipping the baking powder? You don't need that, right? Would you put the cake batter in a pan before using a mixer? No, because you wouldn’t get the results you want. Just like in baking, you will get the best results for your skin when you consistently use all of the ingredients needed. Don't cut corners when it comes to your skincare. Using the right ingredients, in the right formulations, in the right order consistently is the perfect recipe for the best results!
There’s something comforting about following a consistent skincare routine. Those few minutes spent on pampering yourself and your skin can actually come with some perks. Here are 5 benefits to having a consistent skincare routine.
Better Conditioned Skin
You brush your teeth every day in order to properly maintain them and your gums. You know that routine maintenance is a priority to extend the life of your teeth and gums. You should respect your skin the same way.
For many of you, you probably tend to skip steps in your skincare routine because you feel it takes too long or you get lazy. I understand that you are busy and time saved is valuable to you. But a simple four step regimen only takes 5 minutes maximum of your daily time. Keeping a consistent skincare routine will help to treat your wrinkles, even out uneven skin tone, prevent acne, and improve the clarity of your skin.
Your Skin Will Work Harder for You
I know this sounds cliché, but it’s true. When you take care of your skin, your skin will take care of you. Your skin actually works harder while you sleep to regenerate. Cell turnover is faster at night and this allows your products to do their job more efficiently. If you are consistent and properly wash your face and remove your makeup every night, your skin will be better able to repair itself, while moisturizers, serums, and lotions will absorb better into your skin.
You Will See a More Youthful-Looking, Radiant Glow
At some point in time, you may notice dullness in your skin due to stress, environmental factors, and hormonal changes. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. If you make exfoliation a regular part of your skincare routine 2-3 times a week, you will get your glow back. Cell turnover slows down as we age, so it’s important to help the process along so our skin can shed dead cells.
Consistency = Visible Results
How many of you have purchased the latest skincare treatment, moisturizer, serum, or beauty tool promising results only to use it a couple of times before saying it doesn’t work? People get so caught up in a magic potion or miracle ingredients that they expect instant results. Real results will not happen overnight. It will take at least 30-45 days of consistent use for noticeable results to start happening. Moral of the story…stick to your skincare routine. It’s the only way you will achieve real, visible results.
Skincare Maintenance Will Be A Lot Easier
When you first start working out, do you see results the first few days? Probably not. Adopting a consistent skincare routine can be thought of in the same way. But once your routine is established and you’re consistent, you will see visible results. When you stick with your exercise plan, you’ll continue to notice changes in your body and if you keep at it, you will be able to maintain those changes. The same is true with a consistent skincare regimen. Your skin will continue to look healthy and refreshed as long as you don’t give up on the routine.
When it comes to your skincare regimen, be consistent and have realistic expectations. Using a safe and effective regimen consistently is going to get you the best results in the long run, I promise you!
