Why Coding Skills Are Important

We live in a world where technological developments are prominent almost everywhere -- from smart TVs to kitchen appliances, school curricula to online games and job markets. The Future of Jobs Report by the World Economic Forum predicts that 65% of the children entering primary school today will end up working in completely new job types that don’t yet exist. A majority of jobs will require critical thinking and problem-solving. As a result of these interventions and growth in various job sectors, many new jobs will be created, and existing ones will be re-defined. It has, therefore, become essential for educators to equip young learners with new age skills from an early age.

In recent years, technology has been rapidly changing the world as well as the dynamics of the educational curriculum. The ongoing debate on the applicability and usage of ChatGPT by students and teachers shows that we are yet to find the sweet spot on the role of technology. However, technology will disrupt the status quo in areas we might not have considered.

To ensure that technology is made for the right purpose and solves the correct problems, we need to ensure that our kids are exposed to it in a safe way. Coding is an excellent start to address this. Once recognised as a specialised skill for only a niche section of the population, coding has emerged as an essential global skill. Coding has the ability to not only empower learners to consume digital technology but also to create it. As we can no longer deny its importance, the sooner we introduce young learners to coding, the more confident they will be in adapting to the challenges of the 21st-century workforce centred around emerging technologies of tomorrow like AI, VR, AR, ML, Blockchain, IoT and Robotics.

Coding today is a desired life skill in modern education; therefore, teaching it as an integral part of the curriculum can benefit the learner's holistic development. It enables learners with the proficiency to solve problems, i.e. in a logical and creative way, and design sustainable solutions. It helps foster critical thinking and an analytical mindset for innovation.?Realising its importance in a digitally-led world, the New Education Policy (NEP 2020) has also clearly instructed educational institutions to teach coding Grade 6 and onwards. Including coding in the curriculum is expected to pave the way for a new revolution in India's education system and positively impact today's youth.

Even though coding is slowly being taught in more schools, it must still be democratised and taught in regional languages. Coding being dependent on English blocks people from this benefit and is entirely unnecessary at a technical level. So keeping abreast with the educational evolution worldwide, Schoolnet India has collaborated with the vernacular EdTech platform, GUVI Geek Networks, IITM Research Park to offer HackerKID and impart coding skills to students registering on Geneo, Schoolnet’s flagship product. This partnership is an effort towards making quality digital learning accessible to all and opening new doors of advanced technology and programming education for all Schoolnet learners. It aims to prepare young learners who are future torchbearers with advanced programming knowledge and cutting-edge technology through gamification.
