Leaders Can Help Their Teams to Reach Their Full Potential!

You may think that "coaching for high-performance" means coaching for high performers – in other words, people who, for whatever reason, have been identified as "star talent."

Coaching is about helping all people reach their full potential in any area of their lives. For the leader as a coach, this means working with people to improve their performance at work and in life.

Coaching for High-performance may also involve working with other people within your organization – collaborating with other managers and leaders to make the workplace a high-performance culture that helps everybody perform at their best and become their best.

The approaches and techniques used in coaching depend entirely on trust and the ability of the coach to connect with the coachee (the person being coached). Coaching for High-performance conversations usually starts with finding people's "starting points" – their visions, life ambitions, or goals. Then, it moves on to explore the directions in which people need to move to achieve those visions and the steps they need to take to do so. Click Here to Learn more about our Corporate Solutions!

When to Use Coaching for High-Performance?

From my years studying human potential and success, I have found that the performance gap in life and business is between what we know and what we do. Think about that for a moment! Most engineers, staff members, and managers know how to do more and be more productive and efficient, but that doesn't mean they will.

Have you ever wondered why that is? Have you ever wondered why people of similar abilities, backgrounds, education, training, and resources can dramatically affect their results? Have you ever wondered why organizations could spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on employee training programs, and a few months later, everything has stayed the same? The performance is still the same. Learn more, read the article Timeless Habits of Highly Productive People!

How often do we think we know what we want to achieve, only to discover that gaps in willpower and self-discipline hold us back?

Coaching for High-performance helps people explore their motivation and limitations and overcome the blockers that hold them back. It's about both support and challenge. It's beneficial for the following:

Exploring Your People Potential!

Long-term career or life planning – While some people may prefer not to have a "life plan," robust evidence shows that people with straightforward plans and goals are more likely to succeed in the long term.

Navigating career change – An example of a career change could be transitioning from being primarily seen as a manager to a leader who offers clear guidance and genuine inspiration. Coaching can help people navigate these changes more successfully.

Making fundamental changes to performance or certain behaviors involves athletes breaking bad habits in their game and relearning necessary skills correctly.

Handling major life setbacks – Coaching for High-performance can help people recover from significant business or personal setbacks. In particular, it can help people address work-life imbalances or deal with substantial episodes of stress or burnout. To learn more, read the article How to Overcome Your Relationship Problems!

The Fundamentals of Using Coaching for High-Performance!

Coaching typically works best when the coachee (person being coached) sets the agenda and is prompted by the coach to develop their solutions. However, you may need a more direct approach to coach for high performance.

Part of the coach's high-performance job is to help coachees acquire and be confident with the skills they need to achieve their goals. The coach then aids the coachee to match these skills to the task at hand, setting "stretch goals" – goals that are challenging but possible to achieve.

Coaching Guidelines:

Coaches can help coachees see their true potential and eliminate the effect of interfering emotions. Talking about feelings during coaching will help. Also, apply these practices:

  • Think of coachees as athletes wanting to move to their game's next level. 90 Percent of the coaching job is listening, understanding what drives people, and appreciating their emotions. The other 10 percent of the job is asking questions and working with coachees to stretch their performance and explore the skills they need to be their very best.
  • Remember that coaching for high performance is a process and should be fun. So look for issues, and help people imagine what could be possible as part of the process. Read the article 11 Ways to Effectively Communicate and Connect with Others to learn more!

Stretch Your Goals!

Conclusion:

Coaching your Team for High-performance is about helping people to achieve their very best. It's beneficial for long-term career or life planning, dealing with career and life changes, changing performance or behaviors, coping with significant life setbacks, and overcoming substantial challenges.

Coaching for High-performance conversations usually starts with discovering people's "starting points" – their visions, life ambitions, or goals. You can then look at helping the coachee obtain a balanced life and a stable set of skills while looking at emotional and behavioral interference, such as their worries, doubts, and fears.

Coaching for High-performance involves challenging coachees and supporting and guiding them to build their skills and improve their performance in a balanced structural way.

Coaching may sound like a great idea but it's important to remember that it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. Everyone has different needs and goals and it's important to understand what those are before embarking on a coaching journey. It's also important to remember that coaching isn't a quick fix and it can take time to see results.
