Why a Clear Vision of What you Want is a Superpower.
Vision.
It’s a beautiful world that gets tossed about a lot these days. “He’s got the vision to succeed” “She showed great vision to get where she is today” or “ having a vision is important to achieve your goals”.
All these things are, of course true.
But here’s the thing: “If you don’t understand what it’s like to have a vision.
What it physically feels like, and more importantly, what to do when you have it… then it’s just another meaningless buzzword.
Let me explain.
Obsess about something
In my first post, I shared a story about me trying to join my varsity team after my Freshman year.
I hadn’t even made it in the starting five of the freshman team and here I was wanting to play alongside the best the school had to offer.
I had to improve my strength, my mentality, and my overall skill at playing the game if I was to make it on the team.
So you see, for that objective to work, it had to be more than a statement. It had to be more than an affirmation stuck on my bedroom door….
This vision had to literally creep into my dreams.
I could literally see the team uniforms. I’d close my eyes and imagine myself hi-fiving my brother, the lights, the crowd, the scoreboard… everything you can think of.
In my mind, my vision was clear to the point that it already felt like a reality.
I was going to make it on the team and that’s that.
And that clarity helped me take all the right steps to make that happen.
Now, I can already hear you say: “ That’s great Cale but how do I define my vision?”
Great question.
Plant that seed in your mind
I realize that it’s not always easy to have a vision (clear or not) of what you want to achieve.
That’s normal.
We live in a super busy world with so many things competing for our attention, that it’s easy to get caught up and lose focus.
Smaller questions and thoughts like “I wonder if I should have that tuna sandwich for lunch?” or “Oh I forgot to send that email to Bob” etc, etc, … eventually, make you lose sight of the big picture real quick.
But here’s the thing, you don’t need to have a fully formed vision in your mind to start with (we’ll get to that later) but what you do need, is an idea of where you want to go.
To do that, it’s important to take a step back, breathe, and think.
Whether that’s by just sitting down quietly on your porch, or driving around in your car, head out to shoot some hoops… basically, all I’m asking you to do is to give yourself some space to reflect on what you want. It doesn’t have to be perfect…just something that you want to achieve.
And that could be anything. Even making it on your Varsity team, or creating the next Google.
And remember, whatever it is, embrace it, guilt-free.
Because if you’re not causing anybody else harm, then don’t limit yourself. Let your vision be whatever it has to be and start working for it.
The Vision Maker
I have a method called the Vision Maker which has helped me to go from being bankrupt, struggling with divorce, and depression… to be the happiest and healthiest I’ve ever been.
I think it’s the spark you need to get where you want to be.
What it does is take that seed of a vision you worked on earlier and make it as real and tangible as my vision of being on the varsity team.
Now. Vision is only half of the equation. Having one puts you ahead in the game but it’s only a starting point.
Just “dreaming” your way to any victory you set yourself is just not going to cut it.
But you’ll need a clear vision of what you want to achieve before being able to take action on how you’re going to get there.
That’s where the work (and the magic) happens and the Vision Maker is there to help you achieve that.
In a nutshell here are the questions the vision maker forces you to ask yourself:
- What do I want?
- What do I need to get there?
- Who do I need to be to get there?
- What will my life feel like once I’m there?
- Who do I need to meet and interact with to get there?
Applying this method has literally changed my life. Before starting it, I was recovering from a divorce, bankrupt, had relationship issues, and more… but using this method and the other frameworks around it made a world of difference in my life.
You initially get tasked with accomplishing a vision over a short period of time (30 days) but it can go up to 50 year period… The important thing here is to be able to make your future as tangible as possible until it becomes that reality.
Now, this goes deep. It’s as involved as you writing a story about your future life. Who you hang out with, what you do, what it feels like to do what you do… we’re not talking simply saying “ I want to make a million dollars” instead, we’re literally writing the script of that journey, or process, of getting to that million dollars.
And while you’re living every moment of that script, I hope you’ll realize that the process is worth so much more than the goal.
And it’s my hope that you find that the journey, the process even more important than your goal. What you’re doing “in the trenches” to get where you want to be…
