Why Choosing an Independent Roofing Consultant Matters – A Lesson from a Recent Call

Company Director @ TD Roofing Consultants | Non-bias roofing surveys - Raise The Roof - MIoR
At TDRC, we pride ourselves on delivering independent, evidence-based roofing consultancy. A recent phone call from a frustrated salesperson from a well-known waterproofing manufacturer reminded me why this approach is so valuable.
The call began with an abrupt statement: "You’ve just lost me two projects that I’ve been working on for months!"
I took a moment to acknowledge his frustration. Having spent years on the manufacturer’s side of the industry, I know how disappointing it is to lose projects. He explained that missing out would impact his monthly targets and commissions, and while I sympathised, I knew there was more to the story.
When I asked about the projects in question, I quickly recognised them—seven or eight roofs where the original recommendation was to strip everything, install tapered insulation, and add new rooflights. His company had provided a brief report with only a handful of photos, no core samples, and little supporting evidence for such an extensive and costly recommendation.
The salesperson was adamant that everything was fine until TDRC got involved. But in reality, we were invited into the project through a referral—someone the client trusted.
What TDRC Did Differently
Instead of making broad assumptions, we took the time to listen to the client’s concerns and explain our process. Then, we carried out a thorough roof survey, incorporating:
? Infrared assessments to detect hidden moisture issues
? A detailed analysis of existing drainage design, with improvements where necessary
? A strategic approach to insulation upgrades—based on real data, not guesswork
The result? A comprehensive, evidence-backed TDRC performance specification, ensuring the client had the best possible solution for their roofing needs—without unnecessary costs.
Expertise Over Sales Targets
At this point, the conversation took an interesting turn. The salesperson dismissed our work, saying, "TDRC specifications aren’t validated in the market."
That made me pause. I asked him to clarify—was he suggesting that only manufacturers could write specifications? He confirmed that his company’s technical team wrote them.
Here’s the reality: Roofing contractors, manufacturers, and independent consultants all write specifications. The difference? TDRC’s specifications are shaped by over 40 years of hands-on experience in the industry, without any sales-driven agenda.
When I asked the salesperson how long he’d been in the field, he said 25 years old. I smiled and told him: "You have another 40 years ahead of you if you stick with it. Get used to winning and losing—it’s part of the game. But more importantly, look at the service you’re offering. That’s what lost you the projects, not TDRC."
His final remark? He said he would look to "smash" any TDRC specifications in the future. My response was simple: "With that attitude, I’ll probably keep winning projects."
The Key Takeaway: Why Clients Choose TDRC
TDRC isn’t here to sell products—we’re here to provide objective independent, expert-driven solutions tailored to each client’s needs. Our reports and specifications are based on thorough surveys, advanced testing, and real-world experience, ensuring:
? Unbiased advice – We recommend solutions based on building requirements, not product sales.
? Cost-effective outcomes – Clients get specifications that maximise longevity and value.
? Peace of mind – Our work is detailed, evidence-based, and designed to withstand scrutiny.
I could have named and shamed the manufacturer, but I won’t. Why? Because I remember what it was like starting out in the 1980s. You learn, adapt, and—most importantly—you listen to your clients. That’s what makes the difference.
