Why Choosing Freedom Over Convention is Freeing...
This is your host?Martin Ebongué, and I'm here to share another chapter? The Diary Of A Virtual CEO; the story of my journey towards complete freedom.
We live in a world of shoulds.
You should buy a house. You should get married. You should drive a nice car. The list goes on.
Society’s expectations imprison us in uniforms that chafe our souls.
Yet alternatives exist.
We can define success on our own terms and live freely.
How?
By making unconventional choices guided from within.?
In this newsletter, we’ll explore:
- Rethinking societal rules that restrict happiness?
- Valuing flexibility and independence over conformity
- Crafting your ideal lifestyle beyond others’ standards
As Isaac Newton said, “Truth is ever to be found in the simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.”
When we clear away the complexity of external pressures, simple truths emerge about the lives we yearn to live deep down.
Are you ready to uncover yours?
Let’s dive in.
Contemplating What You Truly Want
When we passively follow preset paths, we seldom stop and reflect on whether the road leads where we truly want to go.
A poignant example occurred when I injured himself attempting an ambitious kick at the gym, just to impress a stranger.?
After months of painful recovery, the lingering question remained – why did I do it?
I realized I temporarily abandoned his own values, succumbing to others’ unspoken expectations.
This revelation inspired reconnecting to my authentic desires.
During physiotherapy for my leg, I had an enlightening discussion with my therapist.
Despite vastly different backgrounds, we shared an unconventional outlook on lifestyle design.
Both of us prioritized frequent travel, savoring varied experiences over materialism.
Owning property mattered less than mobility.
For me, even purchasing land recently was driven by my passion for creating a turtle sanctuary, not an interest in possessions for their own sake.
Yet I acknowledge the pull of societal gravity, having bought an apartment years earlier mainly to fulfill expectations of “making it” as a property owner.
As I quipped, “In France, if you own a property then you are someone, if you don’t then your life is a disgrace.”
My story illustrates how easy it is to lose touch with what genuinely matters to us.
We transcend inner wisdom in favor of outer validation.

Questioning Your Own Status Quo
When living on autopilot, we fail to inspect our habits and assumptions.
We become blind to just how much our lifestyles represent someone else’s vision of success versus our own.
Ask yourself:
- How often do you make major life decisions mainly to meet others’ expectations or avoid judgment??
- If societal pressures disappeared, what would you rethink or change about your life?
- What brings you joy and meaning that you currently minimize or overlook?
As Bruce Lee advised, “It is not a daily increase, but a daily decrease. Hack away the unessential.”
We construct fulfilling lives by subtracting external noise and honing in on our core priorities.
This requires swimming against conformity’s current and thinking independently.
Of course, choosing your own path has consequences.
You may disappoint some people.
Your unconventional definition of achievement may not impress everyone.
But as the sage Rumi noted, “Start a huge, foolish project, like Noah.
It makes absolutely no difference what people think of you.”
When you connect to your inner compass, external perceptions fade in significance.
Building Your Dream Lifestyle Brick by Brick?
When your life aligns with your singular priorities versus some standardized blueprint, everything changes.
You structure your day based on what energizes you.
You socialize with people who share your values.
You eliminate draining obligations.
You take career risks that seem crazy to play-it-safe onlookers.
This iteration unfolds gradually.
I continue my own quest to live freely through location independence, deep connections, constant learning and creating a podcast focused on nonconformity.
I help others break free of sacrifice and limitation to define success their way.
We can all move closer to self-actualization by focusing on one priority at a time.
Of course, the tension between conformity and individuality is age-old.
As the 1800s transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau wrote in Walden, “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.
Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away.”
The key is maintaining the courage of your convictions.
As family and friends question your unconventional path, avoid losing resolve. Progress hinges on inner direction, not outer validation.
You may be surprised who relates to your perspective once you live it fully.

The Rewards of Mindset Alchemy
When you transform perspective to align with your values instead of society’s benchmarks, life takes on new meaning.
You recognize each day as a gift, not a given.
You appreciate loved ones and simple pleasures over status symbols that fade.
True success springs from mindset alchemy - the transmutation of conformity into freedom.
Of course, we all occasionally waver.
After an injury, illness or loss, identity confusion can cloud conviction.
Feelings of failure may creep in when comparing against norms.
Self-doubt hatches where certainty once nested.
If this happens, be gentle with yourself. Redirect internally, not externally.
As Oprah Winfrey noted, “You know you are on the road to success if you would do your job and not be paid for it.” When you follow your inner music, external rewards lose significance.
Stay committed to your freedom. You’ll inspire kindred spirits hungry for permission to live unchained.
The next time you face a major decision, pause and consult your inner compass before reacting.
Then take one small step towards your North Star.
One choice at a time, build your dream lifestyle without apology.
The world needs original souls who hear their own beat. Let yours sing.
