Why choose a career in Surveying?

Why choose a career in Surveying?

1. Why should Leaving Cert students consider a career within the property/land/construction industry?

Strong job prospects, competitive salaries, international travel, cutting-edge technology and an academic challenge are just some of the benefits of studying surveying across property, land and construction. With ongoing demand for surveyors across the industry, students who take up surveying today are almost guaranteed a job at the end of their degree, in addition to a competitive salary throughout their career in an industry with equal opportunities across all levels and sectors of the profession.

The pace at which the industry continues to change, combined with the use of innovative technology, highlights the dynamic roles available for those looking to work in the built environment. An advantage of becoming a Chartered Surveyor is the ability to get out and about, be it to attend a team meeting on site, viewing a building for a client or measuring land for digital mapping, rather than being entirely deskbound, allowing graduates to utilise their people skills in addition to their technical skillset. No two days are the same for a Chartered Surveyor!

2. What are some of the course options at SCSI that students can consider for their CAO application?

The SCSI accredits over 20 property, land and construction undergraduate programmes nationwide including in-person and online delivery formats, allowing Leaving Certificate students to design a career that suits their interests, location and preferred study mode. In addition to full time programmes, the SCSI also accredits part-time programmes allowing students the flexibility to also earn as they learn.

As part of their undergraduate studies, students will undertake a work placement period gaining valuable industry experience before they graduate, while also gaining a head start on building their professional network. Students are not required to have studied construction or technology related subjects for the leaving certificate, which makes surveying an excellent choice for everyone but especially during the Change of Mind window!

Irish Chartered Surveyors can be found all over the world. Many head for places like the Middle East, Canada and Australia, because SCSI Chartered Membership is recognised globally graduates can make their mark on some of the world’s most exciting construction projects.

Surveying graduates are leading the way with their proficiency in cutting-edge and sustainable technologies including virtual reality, augmented reality, BIM, 3-D printing, and drones. 4. With the CAO Change of Mind facility open until 1st July, providing students with a last chance to change courses, what advice would you give when making their final choices?

Prospective students still searching for a course leading to good job prospects, strong earning power and a fulfilling career might well be advised to “survey” the landscape.
