Why children get bored in traditional classrooms?
Every kid has their reason for not wanting to learn?
Considering kids are curious by nature, traditional schooling only limits their learning capability.?
Aren't kids mostly packed with schedules these days?
A lot of children find it hard to learn and retain the overwhelming amount of information from school.?
This puts them under too much pressure.?
While we search for freedom when we grow up,?
We do not think of letting our kids have the space to explore?
All this leads to kids not being interested in learning
Reasons children dislike to learn
Lack of Engagement
Lack of Relevance
Lack of Autonomy
Lack of Support
Lack of engagement: If the material is not presented in a way that is engaging or interesting to the child, they may become bored and lose interest.
Why children are not engaged in learning?
The teacher has been complaining about your kid not being focused in class, or your kids are distracted in the middle of doing their studies?
Instead of taking away their entertainment, we need to find out why kids are not engaged.
The concept of flow theory can help support the idea that lack of engagement can lead to boredom in learning.
Flow theory suggests that people are most engaged and motivated when they are in a state of "flow," which occurs when a person is fully immersed in an activity and completely focused on the task at hand.
In order to achieve a state of flow, the activity needs to be challenging, but not too difficult, and it needs to be perceived as interesting and enjoyable.
According to Csikszentmihalyi, flow occurs when a person is engaged in an activity that is challenging but not too difficult, and that is intrinsically rewarding.
In order to experience flow, a person needs to have a clear goal and be able to receive feedback on their progress toward that goal. They also need to be completely immersed in the activity, with a sense of control over what they are doing.
When a person's experience flows, they often lose track of time and become completely absorbed in the activity. They also tend to experience a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment from the activity, which can be highly motivating and lead to a desire to continue with the activity.
?Monotonous teaching methods: Some classrooms rely on monotonous teaching methods, such as rote memorization and lecture-style lessons, instead of allowing students to explore the material in more interactive ways.

?Uninspiring topics: Kids may become bored if they are not interested in the topic being taught or lack a basic understanding of the subject.
?Unrealistic expectations: High expectations from parents and teachers can lead to stress and pressure, making it difficult for kids to learn in a comfortable environment.
Difficulty level: If the material is too easy or too difficult for the child, they may become bored or frustrated.
Despite these challenges, there are still ways to help children become engaged in learning.
?Encourage exploration: Letting children explore topics that interest them encourages them to become more inquisitive and motivated.
?Incorporate technology: Incorporating technology into lessons can help make learning more interactive and fun for kids.
?Make it fun: Games, activities, field trips, and other hands-on experiences can stimulate a child’s curiosity and make learning enjoyable.
Set realistic goals: Setting manageable goals for children to reach can help them stay motivated and build confidence.
Lack of relevance: If the child does not see the relevance or importance of the material, they may not be motivated to learn it.
Why children do not see the relevance
For example, a child who is being taught advanced mathematical concepts may struggle to see the relevance of these concepts if they cannot see how they can be applied in their day-to-day life.
?No connection: If the material does not relate to the child’s life or interests, it can be difficult for them to find significance in learning it.
For example, if students are learning about physics, they may be more motivated to learn if they understand how the concepts they are studying can be applied in fields such as engineering, architecture, and space exploration.
Similarly, if students are learning about chemistry, they may be more motivated to learn if they understand how the concepts they are studying can be applied in fields such as medicine, environmental science, and material science.
?Ages and stages: Kids of different ages and developmental levels may have different needs when it comes to learning.
?Cultural differences: Different cultures may have different ways of looking at the world, and this can influence how children view certain topics. Children in India read a lot of books that are written by English authors, which may not be relevant to their own culture.
Despite these challenges, there are ways to help children relate to learning.
?Connect everyday life: Connecting material to real-world scenarios allows kids to see its relevance in their lives.
?Promote collaboration: Allowing kids to work together on projects can help them connect more with the material.
?Explore cultures: Encourage children to explore different cultures and their ways of understanding the world, as this will help them have a better appreciation for learning.
?Engage in meaningful conversations: Talking about topics that interest children and having meaningful conversations with them can help make learning more enjoyable.

1 年We have introduced passion projects into our primary classroom it has worked very well as pupils have agency over their learning and can explore topics that interest them.It has also been good for our EAL learners.

1 年They don’t teach why such and such thing is relevant they’re just driven blindly to drive the nails into the wall sort of! If they spent few mins telling why they need to know this it would be better I’m sure nothing that can’t be covered in a normal 45 min period. But many feel it’s time waste or ego why they should explain to kids if they’re saying something they should be blindly obeyed. And the manner in which it is taught my god!

1 年Insightful! We spend most of our childhood going to school. If we do not find the place where we spend the majority of our time as purposeful, we may gradually start embracing the entire perspective of life as meaningless, non-relevant, and boring. I have experienced going to school with a purposeless mind. All this leads to is the inclination towards instant gratification like grades and the vicious cycle of pressure. A student ultimately falls into this trap.
