Why check points are so valuable?
If you aren't taking the time to measure the actions you take and the results you get can you be confident about the next steps you take?
One of the biggest challenges you can face as a leader is the confidence to keep taking steps. When your confidence wains it can be easy to question the systems and strategies you have put in place, which usually leads to frustration, overwhelm, and getting stuck and feel all alone.
Not where you want to be as a leader.
One of the key ways to maintain confidence is to measure your progress to date and consider what you might do differently - creating check points along your pathway.
Check points can be a simple pause or a full stop review.
Each can provide value and impact what is real for you, if you commit to taking them.
You take hundreds, if not thousands, of actions and get hundreds of results in a day. Each provides an opportunity to learn. Sadly, many leaders use it as an opportunity to judge.
Are you learning from or judging your actions and results?
Whether learning or judging too much is not helpful and why check points can be different.
The pause check point is a quick evaluation. You took an action or got a result and paused to understand what happened and consider what you might do differently.
The full stop check point is an intended stop in what you are doing and diving deeper into your actions and results.

Both are beneficial and critical.
If you don't pause or stop occasionally you will likely miss things that could be very helpful. If you try to gain too much from the pause you can be overwhelmed and stuck.
One of the key challenges of check points is letting emotion over take learning. Emotion can lead to making decisions without understanding what you have or could have learned.
I would encourage you to pause each day to see what you have learned and decide now the times you will stop for a check point. This way emotion can be a part of learning rather than it replace learning.
You decided without emotion when you would dive deeper not just because you took an action and didn't get a results you expected.
Are you clear how to pause and learn?
When will you stop to measure your progress?
Don't let these check points cause you to feel alone as a leader.

2 年Well said Tom - I think regular checkpoints are so important to ensure we take the time to see if we are making progress or not. Often this is a step that many people don't do or don't do consistently enough and when they inevitably do 'check in' they realize they are on the wrong path. Thanks for the reminder :)

2 年I love how you remove the emotions to really figure out what is working and what is not. Your style of "The full stop checkpoint is an intended stop in what you are doing and diving deeper into your actions and results." is wonderful! It helps to reframe what is working and learn from what needs to change instead of a hard success or fail. Do you do 1:1 with clients on the progress checkpoint as a group?
