Why ChatGPT Will Slow Down Your Unemployment Job Search

Why ChatGPT Will Slow Down Your Unemployment Job Search

ChatGPT is the cool new toy these days, enabling greater use of AI in many applications.

And there are rumblings around the job search world that ChatGPT or similar AI tools will start being implemented into employer and job search applications.

But don't start cheering so quickly ... These are not good developments for job seekers, especially if you're unemployed.

Here's why ChatGPT will slow down your unemployment job search:

  1. ChatGPT Won't Help Your Resume:?Even if ChatGPT is built into resume writing tools making it as JobScan, there are still three problems. First, it depends on a job description as it's input, but job descriptions almost never reflect the hiring manager's current needs (and are often generic or recycled from the last person) ... Outdated information input = output that won't match current needs. Second, AI still makes mistakes and ChatGPT's output often uses incorrect grammar, poor sentence construction, and confusing phrasing - Human reviewers will be able to tell when you use ChatGPT as a resume writer. Third, ChatGPT provides output that's effectively the average of Google results ... and an average resume slows your job search when you're unemployed.
  2. ChatGPT Will Be Integrated Into Applicant Tracking Systems:?AI will bring varying results to how employers build a shortlist of resumes to review. It might work well for you, or it might be worse. If it works well for employers, this will put unemployed candidates at an even bigger disadvantage. Employers should find a greater number of currently employed candidates who are qualified, with less risk than unemployed candidates.
  3. ChatGPT Will Reduce Dependence On Human Reviewers:?The whole point of AI tools is to automate a greater amount of work, reducing costs and labor. Greater employment automation will result in fewer humans reviewing your resume - While this is generally a bad thing for all job seekers, AI powered ATSs will make it much more difficult for all job seekers who present risks to employer (and unemployment presents a risk that an employer may hire a average or poor performer, rather than improving performance of their team).

So what will work to make your unemployment search faster when you're unemployed, as AI tools become integrated into job search and hiring? It will be critical to have a resume that stands out to human readers, to show hiring managers your last employer was nuts to let you go. Also, it's now even more important to avoid online applications, improving your chances of convincing a hiring manager to take a risk on you, rather than being screened out by a "smarter" robot.
