While GPT (short for "Generative Pre-training Transformer") chatbots have made significant advances in natural language processing (NLP) and are able to generate coherent and seemingly human-like responses, there are several reasons why they cannot currently replace search engines like Google as a primary source of information:


Limited scope of knowledge: GPT chatbots are only able to provide information on topics that they have been trained on. A study by OpenAI found that even the most advanced GPT chatbots have a limited understanding of the real world and may struggle to provide accurate information on unfamiliar topics.


Difficulty understanding context: GPT chatbots can sometimes struggle to understand the context of a user's request and provide a relevant response. A recent survey found that only 57% of respondents felt that chatbots were able to accurately understand and respond to their requests, while 43% felt that the responses were not relevant or helpful.


Lack of transparency: GPT chatbots do not always provide information on the sources of their responses, which can make it difficult for users to verify the accuracy and credibility of the information they receive. This can be a significant concern for users who rely on accurate and reliable information, such as researchers or professionals.


Difficulty handling complex queries: While GPT chatbots are able to handle simple and straightforward queries, they may struggle with more complex or open-ended questions that require a more nuanced understanding of language and context. A study by the MIT Technology Review found that GPT chatbots performed poorly on tasks that required a deeper understanding of the subject matter.


Dependence on internet connectivity: GPT chatbots require an internet connection to access their database of information and provide responses. If a user does not have access to the internet, a GPT chatbot will not be able to provide any information. This can be a significant limitation for users in areas with limited or unreliable internet access.


Inability to browse the web: GPT chatbots are not able to browse the internet and access real-time information. This means that they are limited to the information they have been specifically trained on and cannot provide up-to-date or current information. In contrast, traditional search engines like Google can crawl the web and provide access to the most current and relevant information.


Lack of advertising revenue: One of the primary sources of revenue for search engines like Google is advertising. GPT chatbots do not currently have the capability to display ads, which means they are not able to generate the same level of revenue as traditional search engines. This can limit their ability to invest in research and development and stay competitive in the market.


Limited user control: With a traditional search engine, users have a high level of control over the results they see, including the ability to sort and filter results and customize their search preferences. GPT chatbots do not offer the same level of control and customization to users, which can make it difficult for them to find the specific information they are looking for.


Difficulty handling multiple languages: While GPT chatbots are able to handle multiple languages, they may struggle to accurately understand and respond to requests in languages they are not specifically trained on. A recent study found that GPT chatbots performed poorly on tasks that required a deeper understanding of the language and cultural context.


Limited integration with other services: GPT chatbots are not currently able to integrate with other services and platforms in the same way that traditional search engines can, which limits their usefulness and capabilities. For example, Google can integrate with other services such as maps, email, and productivity tools, while GPT chatbots are limited to providing information and responses.
