Why The Chargers Are Still My Team

Why The Chargers Are Still My Team

It’s the first season that The Chargers are in L.A., after 50 something years in San Diego, and I want to tell you why I still support the Chargers. Oh, it wasn’t an easy decision. I was not happy when they moved, and I’m not happy where they are. I don’t refer to them as “the L.A. Chargers,” just “The Chargers” now. I won’t buy or wear any L.A. Chargers gear.

I almost got into at least one fight for sticking with the Chargers, I’ve seen some head shaking, gotten lots of questions, and I’m anticipating more of it. Despite many, many, long and tough seasons, and I’m not just talking just recently, you stick with your team.

Now, the move doesn’t really affect me much. I haven’t gone to a game in years, and I live between L.A. and San Diego. We get L.A. TV. We probably won’t see much of a change, and will probably wind up seeing more games on TV. If they’d moved across the country I might feel differently. If they’d changed the team name, I’d definitely feel differently.

I don’t see it as the team that left, it’s the ownership that took the team away. I don’t like the ownership. So many bad decisions over the years. Letting great players go, bad coaching hires, bad drafts, greed, arrogance, and so much more not to like.

I don’t like the underhanded way they left a loyal fanbase and city. We suspected they might leave, and hoped they might stay, but Dean Spanos basically quickly released a letter and snuck out in the night.

I’ve got too many good memories tied into the Chargers. I’m not a sports guy. I happened to sit down to a nail-biter game and see a field goal block that got them into the playoffs. The next year they went to the Super Bowl and lost badly, but the hype and the heart of the players hooked me. Especially that of my all-time favorite Charger and local boy, Junior Seau.
