Allow me to share with you some key tips for leaders looking to build better teams and organisations.?
?
Leadership today is far different from what it was just two decades ago.
Back then, just merely holding the title of a leader was enough to accomplish your goals.?
?
Today, this form of “armchair leadership” is not sufficient, effective, or appreciated.
?
Companies around the world have also observed that leading their employees requires more than just instructions from the top and a system for them to follow.
?
To cope, many of them have incorporated technology to expedite their processes and stay relevant in a digital world where change is accelerating faster than ever.
?
But more technology is not what people need, per se. Rather, we need to utilise ‘high-tech’ to nurture ‘high-touch’.?
?
This means that we need to focus on making an emotional impact on our employees and our customers. We need to work on “emotional-selling”, rather than traditional “hard-selling”.
?
CEOs and organisational leaders need to practice using not just their heads, but their hearts and hands as well.?
?
In order to successfully support our head-based planning, we need to use our hearts to care for our staff and use our hands to guide our people (this is what I talked about in Leadership 4.0).
?
In today’s Industry 4.0 climate, it’s necessary to be a 4.0 Leader.
?
When I was thrust into my first leadership position, it wasn’t something I desired at first. I was always a good follower; following up with clear and constant communication so that my superiors are always kept in the loop.
?
As a first-time CEO in 2000, I kept up the same communication style – to my management staff and employees. I listened hard to what was happening on the ground so that I can feel the real challenges, subsequently creating an empathetic and encouraging place to work in.
?
Back then, I wasn’t thinking about terms like ‘Leadership 4.0’, but my leadership style was that of a highly active CEO, where I would be communicating the vision, quarterly mission, and weekly agendas using different channels.
?
After all, if it’s worth communicating, then it’s worth over-communicating!
?
To some, I may appear to have achieved a lot, but leadership isn’t a destination. It’s always fluid. A perpetual journey, if you will.
?
You can’t just have a one-size-fits-all framework for every company you lead.
?
When I tried to use the previous success from one hospital to another, I quickly learned that different companies had cultures that were as contrasting as night and day.
?
Just like how I had to adjust and accommodate the different cultures of various hospitals and organisations that I lead, you are likely to find that it’s never the same.?
?
We constantly need to adapt to new industries, diversified communities, the?ever-changing times, evolving social norms, and especially the next generation.
And part of this perpetual journey means that I’m constantly learning and adding to my “war chest” of frameworks so I can integrate them into my leadership approaches.
?
I’m not yet at a place where I’ve arrived, and I always ask myself this:
Would my employees choose me to be their leader if they had a choice?

?
If you put yourself in their shoes, mentality, and present circumstances, would you choose yourself to be your leader?
?
We rarely get to choose our leaders, but would you rather be the type of leader that your employees feel “forced” to follow or one whose leadership they would gladly choose, no matter how difficult the task ahead?
?
For those that I’ve had the opportunity to lead, it’s my privilege to say that most would follow me if they had the choice to.
Not because of any coercion or strong-arm tactic, but because I would take the time to communicate with them. To find common ground with them. And most importantly, to empathise and guide them to a better future together with the company.
?
Each and every one of them will always be given the chance to grow as a leader too.
At every level of the organisation, I build leaders so that they can, in turn, build more leaders. By touching lives, making a difference to them, and building leaders that can lead others.
?
In today’s business landscape, our employees need this form of leadership more than ever. It’s been the secret of successful companies that have stood the test of time, and it can be your greatest tool in your leadership kit.
?
Another way to call it would be ‘distributed leadership’, where power is shared across the organization rather than being concentrated in only a few people in many traditional companies, especially privately owned ones.
?
In many companies, many unsolved problems occur as a result of only one person holding on to power, making the organisation the owner's "Playground".
?
By empowering employees with leadership ability and increasing their autonomy, modern organisations using this leadership style can result in collective solutions when everyone in the company works together collaboratively.
?
If you want your company to maintain high-quality standards in the face of competition and evolving technology, you’ll need to create a culture that can preserve a healthy ecosystem.
?
In today’s environment, we need our employees to be adaptable and quick to react to change, while staying passionate about their work. That’s how to have an engaged workforce that’s fully involved and empowered to perform.
?
In order to create such a culture, the leader needs the defining skill set of emotional intelligence, or ‘emotelligence’.?
?
Others will want to follow a leader with high emotional intelligence because this type of leadership tends to be more skilled in decision-making, managing relationships, and work performance.
Such leaders exhibit qualities like empathy, patience, kindness, transparency, authenticity and forgiveness amongst others.

My message really comes down to this:
"With high emotional intelligence, you’ll succeed where others fail.
And you’ll be the leader that others want to follow."?
?
If you found the leadership lessons inspiring, please share it with someone you want to inspire as:
“People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.”
