Why the CEO of Magnolia Bakery walks 1 hour to work every day

Corporate leaders are so busy running companies that they sometimes forget to look after their own health, and stories of executive-level burnout are rampant.?

Recently, JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes cited “the extraordinary pressures” of his job as his reason for stepping away, saying that he was going to take time to focus on his “health and well-being.” And European soccer coach legend Jürgen Klopp said he was “running out of energy” when he announced in January that he would be stepping down.?

But some CEOs are finding creative ways to look after their own health as they lead for the long haul. Bobbie Lloyd , the CEO of Magnolia Bakery, uses an hour-long morning walk to work to clear her mind and prepare for the day. “I walk to work almost every day,” she recently told Fortune. The habit began during the pandemic, but she says it helps fuel her creativity for another role she holds at the company: chief baking officer. Lloyd says she tries to take a different path through Manhattan to work every day. Other parts of her routine include morning yoga and weekend trips to her property upstate where she grows her own vegetables. She also runs several times a week, a habit that she says is about “resetting the brain.”?

As employees and managers alike are trying to find new ways to stay engaged at work and stave off burnout, business executives should think about doing the same.? You can take a peek behind the wellness routines and other tips from CEOs here.?

Leadership Tip of the Week ??

Collaboration is key—at least if you ask employees. And executives who fail to collaborate with their workers risk losing their trust, according to a Deloitte report published this month. The days of edicts from on high are over, and it’s up to managers to bring everyone to the table. That might mean changing your leadership model to source input from different sources at the company and include workers in decision-making processes.?
