Why can’t they say my name correctly?
In this week’s episode of Brown Table Talk, we unpack this topic: Why can’t they say my name correctly? Remember that names were given to us by someone who had big hopes and dreams for us. Because here’s the thing: my name is important. Your name is important. Let’s honor each other by saying our names correctly.
As always, you have a standing invitation to join us at the Brown Table Talk Podcast. Take a listen to this episode and share it with someone who needs to hear a different perspective today.
Because change requires tough conversations. Tough conversations like these.? And we can’t change what we won’t discuss.

2 年Thank you, Mita for raising this topic! So important! It really hits home for me representing the Chinese community! It's all too common for others to ask if we have an English name or to label us with initials for the sake of convenience, which can feel dismissive of our cultural and personal identities. Personally, I've had to put in extra effort to coach others remember how to pronounce my name - it's Ai Fang (iFang), which shares almost same pronunciation as iPhone. I love my name as much as everyone loves iPhone! :)

2 年My first name, maiden name and even my married name have been mispronounced and butchered all my life. My way of taking care of that is if you cannot take the time to learn my name correctly then I have to wonder if you are worth my time. Take the time to ask people if you are pronouncing their name correctly and on the other side kindly correct those who are not pronouncing your name correctly. I cannot tell you how happy it makes me when someone says my full name correctly and I tell them so.
