Why can't functions hit their goals.

Hey Friends,

Why are enablement functions taking months even years to execute on foundational programmes of work?

The way the we live is 24/7, slack, emails, Netflix, Uber Eats, yet what is leaving me bemused is the level of execution in enablement in the world right now and I think I know why not only potentially why Enablement are suffering but other functions that should be getting shit done a lot faster.

Distractions

I have been in the working world for long enough to now to know the difference between me "being online" and "getting work actually done". My honest (and only my own opinion) is that there are so many things we can get rid of to help execute of programmes of work much faster.

  • Slack Turn all notifications off when you are in the flow of work
  • Zoom meetingsIf the zoom meeting has no agenda, no next steps, push back, do you really need to be there or is it "a zoom for a zooms meeting sake"
  • Office hours Let's not dig into this one as its more a personal preference, mine is WFH, I have my screens, my desk, my home and most importantly my time is protected from distractions, to do what I am paid to do.
  • Blocks of time If you aren't blocking time out in your calendar you are not being anywhere near as effective as you can be. We talk about this a lot in a sales cadence, it applies to all roles
  • Lack of Clear Goals They don't give you clear guidelines on what they need, they might not know what they need in Enablement so what can you do here? Be proactive, look for the programmes of work that are high impact where can you tie ROI in and ensure you over communicate to the business / stakeholders what you are working on.
  • Consulting Vs EmployedI treat my employed roles like a consulting role, why? So that i'm working to tight timelines, I am not wasting time in work politics and I am delivering speed to market with strong attention to detail in the process. Parkinson's Law. If you have 12 months to do something, no doubt it will take 12 months, give yourself tight OKRs like you are carrying a quote.

You only have a certain amount of willpower day, thats why you aren't eating buckets of Ice cream at 7am but by 7pm you are tired, done with the day and your willpower is drying up pretty fast.
