Why Business Owners Must Make a Choice Between 'In Business' or 'On Business' for Sustainable Growth?

“You are not stuck where you are unless you decide to be.”

-???????Wayne W Dyer

What if every aspiring business owner begins his journey by dreaming about the future to launch his business, build his business, grow his business, and finally acquire a new business to become a serial entrepreneur?

?

What if every aspiring business owner set a vision for his business and focused on adopting a powerful system and processes to drive his business with the active participation of his self-managed team to realize the vision?

?

Being in Business is a business scenario where the business owner considers himself at par with an employee and performs most of the jobs/tasks that were supposed to be performed by his employees. Almost everyone reports to him in his business, and in the absence of any delegation as well as accountability, every employee approaches him for decisions since the decision-making is centralized. The business owner gets into operational and transactional activities without any focus on getting things organized and managed through the system. On average, the business owner works for 65-70 hours a week working beyond office hours including weekends and holidays to clear the growing work pressure yet the workload multiplies without seeing any closure to most of the tasks that get piled up and get into the pending list. Obviously, it leads to stress, work-life imbalance, no vacation, no quality time with family, sometimes it leads to loss of temperament, conflict with team members on petty issues, and so on.

?

Being on Business is a business scenario where the business owner holds absolute control with a helicopter view of his business. It is the system and process that drives and helps the organization run through the trained and engaged teams. The job role and responsibility of every team member as well as the team leader are clearly defined. The vision, mission, and values are in place and active as part of the business plan for execution. The inter-departmental coordination and alignment are excellent. The direct reports report to the CEO of the business who in turn reports to the business owner. However, in the case of a small business, functional heads report to the business owner in accordance with the matrix form of the organizational chart. The performance measurement system is in place and monthly reviews are conducted on a serious note and constructive feedback is given to the team members for course correction. Every functional goal is defined and individual goals are measured periodically such as quarterly evaluation and half-yearly measurement. ??

A Case for On Business

Every business owner has a choice between Being in Business or Being on Business. Unfortunately, the reason for the selection of any one choice out of available two choices remains unknown to the business owner till he realizes that he has paid a very heavy price and would either pay the heavy price for his wrong selection of option by remaining in business or enjoys the multiple rewards of his right selection of option by remaining on business.
