Why Chinese Business Owners Are Failing to Communicate Effectively in English with Their International Customers.

Do you wish the time you spend studying English can impact directly on your work and produce real results to help you communicate more effectively with your international customers and make your business more successful?

I know exactly how you feel – I have also had these frustrations when learning different languages.

Let me shock you here and tell you that the way you have been studying English is not effective and you are focusing all your energy on the wrong things.

Instead of studying English as a whole, you need to shift your focus to the specific skills you need as a business owner to communicate more effectively in English with your international customers and clients.

Perhaps I could make this idea clearer by using an analogy:

Imagine starting a fire with a magnifying glass.

If you gather together some dried leaves in a pile on a hot sunny day and wave the magnifying glass over the pile of leaves, moving it up and down, left and right, trying to catch the sun’s light…

… you will quickly find out that this will not have any effect whatsoever.

Instead, if you sit down and hold the magnifying glass perfectly still on one small area of the pile and use the sun’s light, you will start to see smoke and then a spark and then the whole pile will go up in flames.

This is how focusing on the right skills can help you communicate more effectively in English.

The good news is that you can make this change and advance your English communication skills so that you can grow your profits internationally by following this simple 3-step approach:

STEP 1: Consolidate your communication foundation. It's vital to understand how to communicate and do business across different cultures effectively and learn and use the relevant vocabulary you need as a business owner. Having this foundation will help you avoid any problems and misunderstandings in conversations, help you build trust with your international customers and express your ideas clearly.

Solution: To improve your vocabulary you need to build a list of frequently used professional words and expressions which are used in conversations with your customers and review and recycle them regularly.

STEP 2: Improve your communication efficiency. Sharpening your marketing, sales and networking skills is key to getting new international customers and helping them understand how your products and services will benefit them and solve their problems. If these skills are not in place, you will not be able to introduce your business or describe your product or service effectively enough to win new business. Furthermore, feeling awkward and unconfident speaking to your customers in conversations, sales calls and networking events will result in lost opportunities and no sales.

Solution: To improve your communication efficiency you need to work on your word choice, improve your conversational fluency and start conversations in an interesting and engaging way. Mirroring your customers by copying their speech patterns as best you can and recording yourself reading texts and sales scripts aloud and listening back to yourself will help you with your spoken fluency.

STEP 3: Improve your professional writing skills. Polishing your professional writing skills will help your customers and clients understand that you are an expert in your field and convince them to work with you over your competitors. Writing professional, well-structured e-mails and introduction letters will trigger new customers to open, read and reply to your communications rather than ignore and delete them.

Solution: To improve your professional writing skills you need to focus on keeping your messages short and concise and understand how to open an e-mail in an engaging way. Writing an outline and making a note of the key ideas you want to communicate before you start typing e-mails and letters will save you a lot of time and help you avoid writing irrelevant information. ???
