Why is Business Communication Important?

Business Communication and by that, I mean the act of communication between multiple parties (both internal and external) related to their respective businesses, always plays a vital role in dealing with people and information. In fact, it is this skill that is often put to use between people who are totally strangers to each other, with trade being the only common anchor.

It is by default understood that business communication is a bridge that’s built between individuals across different nations, different cultural backgrounds, and diverse ideologies only to converge and experience a seamless act of trade and to prolong a continued healthy relationship.

At this moment the criticality is clearly understood, so let us dive closely in understanding the evolving landscape in this modern era. Regardless of the era, a constant element that will always remain in business communication is the play between power dynamics. Language is inherently arbitrary; just the sound or symbol of a word or phrase doesn’t really have much meaning to it, the meaning is shaped up by social & culturally determined contexts.

Money, for instance, doesn’t inherently have any value, it is just a piece of paper with designs, it is given a value only when people accept it culturally. Similarly, the language used in context by people from different hierarchies has a significant impact on meaning.

If a lead/CEO says “Time is Money” to their reporting teams, then the statement is absolute, the necessity is clearly understood. It can practically be argued and an opposite perspective can be given, such as “Effort is money” but when a subordinate says, the impact is less and takes a long act of convincing. ?This is because of the power dynamics within the hierarchies.

This example is given to make sure that it is critically important to be mindful of the use of language, it is like playing chess with words. Due to this power structure, communication evolves into formal and informal categories; culturally in the current era of business communication, the border is blurred.

Casual language is also considered professional, only because it is culturally accepted by most of the organizations. The Silicon Valley companies are some giants, such as Google, Meta, Amazon, & Apple etc.

They’ve normalized the usage of casual and informal English in a professional environment where the agenda is simple; right meaning has to be conveyed in a harmless way.

?Hence, it is important to notice that language is preliminarily shaped up based on cultural usage; eventually, it complements society through networking, lifestyle, and values.

Language is integrated in various domains and aspects of life, and when it comes to business communication, it is definitely important to learn the nuances to leverage its power to the fullest extent.
