Why Build Passive House?

Why Build Passive House?

Living in warm, dry, healthy, happy homes is the right of every individual in New Zealand. It must be our collective vision for our nation’s future.

This is a vision shared by others right across the whole world.

Passive House is an international voluntary standard used and tested right around the globe. https://www.healthyhome.kiwi/passive-house-healthy-home-cooperation

Many people have heard of passive house.

Passive House stands for healthy, comfortable living and impressive energy efficiency, regardless of the regional climate.

#Passivhaus has been built in 60 countries around the world.

Passive house has certified 41,600 units representing a total floor area of 3,866,000 m2, and 5,727 buildings world wide.

Passive house is soon to become the minimum building standard in Scotland; Passive Hoos?

There are 169 certified passive house buildings in Aotearoa and counting

Passive house is unapologetic in its rigidity.

Passive House is black and white, pass or fail.

There is no “she’ll be right.”

There is no “near enough.”

There is no “No.8 wire” poking out.

Passive house is not constrained by selling stars.

Passive house does not ignore some key requirements to ensure enough entrants for a house of the year competition.

The only thing that changes in passive house design between countries is the climate data used.

Passive house uses 19 climate zones provided by NIWA to take into account the diverse climatic conditions of #aotearoa; the NZ Building Code Acceptable Soution H1 has 6, recently upgraded from 3.

Passive house uses an extensive Excel spreadsheet called the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) to model and confirm energy efficiency and comfort outcomes before construction.

Passive House certification provides an independent review of both the design and construction of the building being assessed.

Passive house provides construction quality control checking.

Passive House is backed by science.

Passive House is rigorous.

Passive house applies to all buildings the same way, whether it’s a home, a kura, a hospital or hotel.

Passive house does not tell you how to design or what the design should look like, just how it could? perform.

Passive house has an easy way or a hard way. That’s personal choice.

Passive House had three options to suit desires and dollars.

Then the Passive House Institute | Passivhaus Institut added for those that just missed out on Classic;

Passive House Low Energy.

This has been the only concession. Passive House low energy has of course become the new target ?? too. A fear, the passive house purists had.

Passive house has a renovation standard called Enerfit.

Passive house considers comfort.

Passive house considers people and planet earth

Passive house has a built in carbon calculating ribbon.

Passive House has been incorporated into the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Building for Climate Change documentation.

Passive House Low Energy Building provides the thermal performance for the Intermediate Cap and Passive House classic, provides the Final Cap requirements.

Other New Zealand voluntary standards include passive house performance in their upper echelons;

Passive House is the basis for Superhome Movement "Best"

Passive House Planning Package is the engine driving Homestar.

BRANZ has recognised passive house.

https://www.level.org.nz/passive-design/passive-house/

Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities has built a certified Passive House.

https://kaingaora.govt.nz/urban-development-and-public-housing/innovation/kainga-ora-passive-houses/

Passive House provides a standardised system for comparing and contrasting energy ratings across all buildings, right around the world.

An immigrant would know what they are buying. A tourist would know the quality of the accommodation that they are staying in. An overseas office worker would know that the air quality inside their workplace is sound.

Passive house is international, so provides accelerated learning opportunities and human resources for design and certification.

Passive house covers all bases.

Passive House Works!

Given the low standard of housing here, Passive House-low energy building is the logical place to start in NZ, as it’s still leaps and bounds better than Building Code.

Passive house purists would of course prefer classic, plus or premium as the starting point. There is a climate emergency, after all.

Passive house is not perfect. But at this point, there is nothing passively more perfect.

Penny pinching needs to stop.? As a nation, we need to provide warm, dry, healthy homes, for all Kiwis. This can’t be based solely on arbitrary assumptions and guesswork.

Passive house provides the path of practical progress to perfection.

I missed one. Someone recently said #passivehouse is passive solar on steroids. Don’t know about that. I’d characterise passive solar as an important part of the overall passive house design process. Passive House Principles are Always Airtight, Thermal bridge free, heat recovery ventilation, wonderful windows and inspired insulation!

Cool! We are well above 83 buildings now - not every building makes it into the database, someone needs to pursue this actively for the project to make it there. Here's a better overview:
