Why Breath is Essential for a Successful Mindfulness Practice

When you hear “mindfulness practice” what is the first thing you think of? 

Is it being in nature, paying attention to the rustling of leaves? 

Or maybe trying to name your emotions as you feel them.

These are all important elements of a mindfulness practice, but the important foundation of every mindfulness practice is often overlooked. 

That’s your breath. 

So today let’s explore why your breath is essential for a successful mindfulness practice. 

Our breath takes us out of our head and into our belly, this grounds us. 

Breathing lowers our center of focus in our bodies.

As we work to solve a problem our focus is in our minds. Breathing takes the focus out of our heads and into our bellies.

This lowers our center of gravity and helps ground us. 

Focusing on the breath during our mindfulness practice may feel boring or unimportant, but it’s one of the MOST important practices we can learn because it helps us rest our minds. 

Our breath helps us recover from daily stresses. 

When we are stressed our breathing becomes quick and shallow. This was fine in ancient times when our stressors were physical ones (like hiding from a predator). 

But our stresses now are now emotional and psychological. So instead of being in danger, then calming down after the stress passes we are stuck in that stress endlessly. 

This affects our breathing. 

That’s why it’s so important to learn how to properly use mindfulness AND breath together.
