Why bother with onboarding?

While many organizations invest huge amounts of resources into designing the perfect customer journey, less thought is given to the journey of the employee, especially to the importance of proper onboarding. This is a huge missed opportunity.
Studies have shown that companies do not pay enough attention to the experience of new hires, those upskilling, or ‘cross-boarding’. One survey found that 22% of companies don’t have any formal process in place, and another 49% say theirs is only slightly successful.
What’s more, Gallup reported that 88% of employees don’t think their organization does a great job of onboarding new starters.
Yet, companies with a standard onboarding process experience 50% greater new hire productivity, and 54% of companies with onboarding programs reported overall higher team engagement. And better yet 69% of employees are more likely to stay with a company for three years if they experience great onboarding.
It’s clear that organizations that fully understand the importance of onboarding are more likely to cut time-to-productivity down, whilst giving staff an enjoyable and valuable experience, whereas businesses that fail to embrace onboarding are more likely to suffer from retention or staff engagement issues.
