Why blockchain is important...

The PwC Nigeria Blockchain team has met with a number of groups to discuss the potential for blockchain in different sectors. We believe this technology is critical for us to build trust in our society through its ability to create transparency, enhance security and automatically enforce contracts. We are excited about the reception that blockchain is receiving – no one is asking what it is, rather, everyone is asking how to get started!

Formerly, I’ve discussed the importance of blockchain in land registry and the potential impact it is sure to have in legitimizing property rights and ownership. Additional areas that blockchain can positively disrupt are capital markets, pharmaceutical supply chains and digital identities.

One question I would like to ask Dr. Nevin, on the subject of block chain. Has the system been effectively tried on a small scale, i.e. on one plot, or a limited number of plots for example, and what were the results over a period of three months for example? I think that such an initiative, if it is carefully watched, followed up and minutiously described? will throw a clear light on the entire project, and will serve to attract more nigerian supporters. Am I right there dr. Nevin? I am aware, of course, that even the most elaborate system can be ultimately circumvented, but such an experiment would serve to instill popular confidence in the system and serve as a springboard for a wider implementation.

Great potential for using blockchain technology to enhance accountability in the use of public funds. WFP is already using it to “control financial risks” in distributing aid supplies: https://innovation.wfp.org/project/building-blocks
