Why Blending in Is Anything but Safe

Why Blending in Is Anything but Safe

The Dangers of Being an Average Business

In the business world, it can be easy and feel safe to blend in. When you take a look at your competitors and think “We all offer similar services at similar prices with similar values”, it can be tempting to just keep your head down and try not to rock the boat. After all, if everyone else is doing the same thing, why would you risk standing out?

But here’s the thing: blending in is dangerous. Why? Because when people can’t tell one business from another, they start looking for reasons to choose one over the other.

And those reasons often come down to price—which means that everyone is undercutting each other until eventually no one makes any money.

Not only that, but if you don’t stand out from the crowd, then you’re missing out on potential customers who may have chosen you—if only they knew what made you different!

How do You Stand Out?

So, how do you stand out from the competition?

It starts with really getting to know your customer.

  • What are their needs?
  • What are their pain points?
  • How does your product or service solve their problems and make their lives better?

Once you understand this, then it’s time to develop a unique positioning statement that communicates why your business is different and better than anyone else’s.

This should be reflected in everything from your website copy to your social media posts to even how you answer the phone when someone calls.

It also helps to understand what makes a good story—and a good storyteller—so that you can craft compelling messages about why customers should choose you over everyone else.

This doesn't mean making up stories; rather it's about finding ways of telling people about what makes your business unique and special that will resonate with them on an emotional level.

You want them to feel like they're part of something bigger than just a transaction; like they're part of an exclusive club where everyone knows each other and has access to special benefits no one else does.

You also need to differentiate yourself visually so that when people see your logo or website design or store signage, they immediately recognize it as yours (and not someone else's).

Investing in good branding—including everything from fonts and colors to tone of voice—can go a long way towards helping establish recognition for your business in the marketplace.

Wrapping up

Standing out from the competition can be scary—but blending in should terrify you even more!

By taking steps such as understanding customer needs, developing unique positioning statements, crafting compelling stories around why customers should choose you over everyone else, and investing in good branding design, your business will stand apart from the competition and become memorable in no time!

Excellent post, Andy Anderson. Getting lost in the crowd is not a sustainable strategy; it only yields a continual decline.
