Why Biotech? Why Amgen?
I recently visited Amgen’s research center in Denmark, where Head of Parallel Chemistry Mathilde Daugaard shared with me details of our unique approach to small-molecule drug discovery.

Why Biotech? Why Amgen?

Want to make a difference in the world??Whether you’re a newly-minted college graduate looking for your first job or someone already in the workforce searching for a more meaningful career, think about the biotechnology industry – and Amgen in particular.?Here are three reasons why:

First, biotech companies are bringing forward extraordinary innovation – right when the world needs it most.?We are living in the “biocentury” – a time that will be characterized by dramatic advances in our understanding of human biology and how to prevent and treat serious diseases affecting hundreds of millions of people. ?We’ll need the best science we can get, too, given demographic trends around the world.?There are already 700 million people worldwide over the age of 65, and another 150 million people headed there by the end of the decade. ?This will drive massive global demand for medicines from seniors confronting diseases of the aging process like heart disease, inflammation, cancer, and osteoporosis – diseases for which Amgen already offers innovative medicines and is advancing potential new treatments through our research and development pipeline.?

?Second, growth prospects for the best biotech companies remain impressive. ?Over the past few years, billions of dollars flowed into the biotech industry, enabling lots of start-ups to toss around lots of money and fancy titles.?That’s quickly changing now and, to paraphrase the legendary investor Warren Buffett, it’s only when the tide goes out that you learn who’s been swimming without a bathing suit.?Amgen has been in business for more than 40 years.?We’re one of the world’s original biotech companies and now rank as one of the largest – having seen thousands of companies come and go in between.?We have strong growth prospects in the coming years, which should enable us to continue investing in our business and in our people.?To give just one example, we invested $4.8 billion in research and development last year, seeking to advance medicines that make a big difference in the fight against serious diseases.?You can read more about our growth strategy here . ?

Third and most important, biotech companies are doing work that truly matters. ?The pandemic has left many people searching for work that has meaning.?Those of us in the biotech industry wake up every morning knowing that our work is helping millions of people live longer, healthier, happier lives.?Many of these people are our family and friends, our neighbors and coworkers.?This is not an abstraction, it’s personal.?And we have so much work still to do.?Despite the progress we’ve made, heart disease claims 18 million lives a year, while cancer takes another 10 million. ?To engage directly in the fight against serious diseases like these is enormously fulfilling.?I believe that helps to explain why Amgen has earned so many recognitions as a great place to work , including being named one of "America's Best Large Employers" by Forbes magazine earlier this year.?

To explore the wide range of opportunities we have available, please visit our Careers page on Amgen.com. ? It truly is an exciting time for our industry and for our company.??

I have worked for small companies (myself) and for very large (Sanofi). For the majority of people starting out I would recommend a medium to large. You will learn better in a structured environment and get to work with top notch scientists. After a while you can transition to a small company if you like the idea of wearing many hats. I’ve worked with several ex-Amgen employees and never heard any complaints.
