Why Not Be the Best You Can Be? And Two Reasons Why You Need to Be….

Any day is as good a time as any to evaluate our processes and ask ourselves some very serious questions…. 

Why not be the best you can be? 

I think, when I look at all the questions that a person can ask of themselves, this is the most valuable question that keeps recurring with repeated regularity.

And it’s the *theme*, as it were, that keeps driving those of us with motivation to be on the top of our game, day in and day out, week in and week out, year in and year out.

I think it was Jim Rohn who said it best: 

“Every life form seems to strive to its maximum except human beings. How tall will a tree grow? As tall as it possibly can. Human beings, on the other hand, have been given the dignity of choice. You can choose to be all or you can choose to be less. Why not stretch up to the full measure of the challenge and see what all you can do?” 

It’s a creed that I’ve lived by for most of my adult life, with a couple of exceptions…

But it’s interesting, or interesting to me, how many people out there don’t want to live their lives to be the best they can be but are simply just living their lives by going through the motions.

This week I’ve been watching and participating and reading an online forum on Goals and Goal Setting that quickly became divided into those who do and those who do not. And interestingly, those that do not became very belligerent as to why their way was *the* way, or the *better* way, when in fact, it really wasn’t even a way at all.

It was a way of not.

What I found interesting, or alarming, was the high number of people on this forum [well, way higher than I would have expected] who were literally just going through the motions with such a dislike of what they do for a living. And happy to tell those who’d listen…

Such people, whether employees, managers or business owners, whether they like it or not, whether they believe it or not, *DO* impact negatively on their co-workers, their customers and clients, and I believe their friends and families.

And worst of all, they impact negatively on themselves as well. 

Which brings me back to Customer Service 

Unless you’re a hermit, living in complete isolation, you’ve got to interact with people. Other people.

With coworkers. Family. Shopkeepers. Service providers.

Interaction cannot be avoided.

So why not be the best you can be?

In dealing with these “other” people, it makes great sense to me to not just sometimes, but at all times, to put on your best possible face at every moment that you possibly can. For two reasons:

Firstly, they’ll think much better of you if you’re giving it your best. If you’re being as nice as you can be. And the best that you can be. Towards them. Because every moment that you’re not, that you’re not being your best, that you’re not at your best, is a moment that they will record a demerit point, a black mark, a negative notch against your name, your personality, your character. And that black mark will be hard to erase.

Secondly, and far more importantly, is the question of what gives you the right to impact your negativity and your mood upon their day, just because they happen to be part of your day.

You don’t know what’s going on in their day at that moment? Do you?

So if you don’t, then why not be the best you can be to *ADD* to their day, to improve their day, and to make their day.

Why not be a “Day Maker”?

Why not have the attitude in life to touch every person you meet with kindness and with pleasantness? Rather than with ignorance and apathy? Or with anger and depression? 

Why not be World Class? 

Why not indeed?

Why not choose, now, to be a World Class Person? To be the best you can be. At all times. To everyone? Because there’s no point in being piecemeal. In being there part of the time.

Because that’s not right. And it’s not fair.

No one wants to receive part time. No one wants or deserves to receive nice or best as part of a lottery.

So don’t give it. Part time. Don’t!

If you’re going to be there, then be there…
