Why the Best Leaders Always Break These ‘Golden Rules’

Leadership is often framed by a set of so-called “golden rules.” These are the principles we’re told to follow, the lines we’re told never to cross, and the norms we’re conditioned to respect.?

But the truth is, the best leaders—the visionaries, the disruptors, the game-changers—don’t follow rules just because they’re traditional. They assess, they question, and, yes, they break the rules when doing so aligns with their higher purpose.

Let’s understand why breaking these “golden rules” often leads to extraordinary leadership.

Rule 1: “Don’t Take Risks”

The traditional mindset insists on playing it safe, sticking to proven methods, and avoiding failure at all costs. But in leadership, safety is not synonymous with success.

  • Why the best leaders break it: Leaders who excel understand that calculated risks are the price of innovation. Whether it’s launching a bold new product, pivoting a business model, or advocating for an unpopular decision, they recognize that no growth comes without discomfort.
  • The lesson: Break the rule of avoiding risk. Instead, evaluate and embrace risks that align with your vision. As I often tell my clients, “If it feels uncomfortable, it probably means you’re on the right track.”

Rule 2: “Always Follow the Rules”

This golden rule suggests that conformity leads to credibility. But the best leaders don’t simply follow—they redefine the rules of the game.

  • Why the best leaders break it: Following the rules may get you respect, but rewriting the rules earns you influence. Whether it’s challenging outdated industry practices or introducing disruptive strategies, exceptional leaders reshape the landscape instead of working within its confines.
  • The lesson: Don’t break rules recklessly, but do break them intentionally. Every rule you challenge should be in service of creating something better, not simply rebelling for the sake of it.

Rule 3: “Put Everyone Else First”

This rule glorifies self-sacrifice, often to the detriment of the leader’s own well-being and effectiveness.

  • Why the best leaders break it: Exceptional leaders know that their energy and focus are finite resources. They prioritize themselves—not out of selfishness, but to show up as the best version of themselves for their teams and organizations.
  • The lesson: Break the myth of martyrdom. Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s strategic. When you invest in your growth, health, and mindset, you lead with clarity and strength.

Rule 4: “Stick to What You Know”

Tradition dictates that leaders should stay in their lane and build on existing expertise. But that’s not how the best leaders evolve.

  • Why the best leaders break it: Growth demands discomfort, and sticking to what you know keeps you stagnant. The best leaders embrace learning, taking on challenges and opportunities that stretch their capabilities.
  • The lesson: Break free from your comfort zone. Seek out new experiences, skills, and perspectives. Leadership isn’t about knowing it all; it’s about growing through it all.

What Breaking Rules Really Means

Breaking the golden rules of leadership doesn’t mean throwing out principles or acting without purpose. It means discerning which rules serve your mission and which ones stifle it.

In my coaching, I challenge executives and entrepreneurs to question the rules they’ve been handed. Why? Because the leaders who rise above the rest are the ones who aren’t afraid to disrupt, challenge, and innovate.

The world doesn’t need more rule-followers—it needs more trailblazers. If you want to raise your prices, secure promotions, and become regarded as a thought leader, don’t just follow the golden rules. Break them with intention, lead with vision, and create your own economy.

You have the power to change the game. It starts with refusing to play by the same old rules.
