Maritime companies invest in their people's skills because they know that they wouldn't be able to operate without their employees. Some may do what is necessary (i.e. compulsory), and some may go above and beyond to be ahead of their competitors.
The latter are the ones who usually see the bigger picture. They understand that they benefit the most by investing in their people and retaining them within the company. Enhancing your teams' skills increases their confidence in themselves and, consequently, their productivity.
It's a win-win situation!
There is a plethora of courses and training formats, and one of the most common questions I get from stakeholders is, "what is the best training format?".
My answer is, "it depends".
Before you roll your eyes, let me tell you why:
Each company is a living organism. It's a unique micro-society with its own business culture, goals and standards.
At the same time, each company has its challenges and problems. And yes, there are patterns and commonalities in the issues I am asked to solve, but there is more to that.
So let's begin the analysis:

Firstly, I try to understand the company as a whole: what is the business, what is the internal structure, what is the composition of their shore-based teams and their seafarers, what are some problems they have come across, what are they trying to either fix or prevent from happening, what are their priorities for the following months.
Once I start understanding what is behind a big name, I start analysing what works best for them within the timeframe they have in mind and with the resources they can invest (i.e. people and budgets).
As you see, several factors need to be taken into account before offering training to a company. So far, a bespoke training programme has proven to be the best solution for the company's highest return on investment (ROI).
So depending on the situation and the client, a training programme will be planned, developed and delivered to suit those needs and meet the desired objectives.
That training programme can consist of different elements such as a short lunch and learn session, a coaching programme for the leadership team, in-person interactive workshops and even pre-recorded training videos; role plays and reports.
By having a bespoke training programme made exclusively for your company, you ensure that you get the best solutions. Sometimes, off-the-shelf training can do what you want, but it's usually for something short-term that doesn't result in big transformations.
For big transformations, you need time, people's buy-in, money and something tailored to your needs and situation that will align with your company's vision and mission.

2 年Great article Kate Bollanou, M.Sc. ???? ???? I particularly enjoyed the way you outlined why each organisation is individual and understanding what works for them best and bespoke training is more beneficial to the organisation in the time of energy invested for the participants as well as time and of course ROI for the organisation as you clearly explain. Great article thanks for sharing
