Why being able to collaborate is good for your health!
Gill Tiney
Business strategist and founder of Collaboration Global, bringing good people together to create positive impacts on our world. Collaboration is my passion, our route to a better future for all.
Over the years as I have delved deeper into the why, what and how of collaboration, the benefits are glaringly obvious:
o??Reach a bigger audience
o??Create more leads
o??Leverage another person’s specialism
o??Create new markets
?o Make more money
What I also know is that there are not such obvious benefits that we often take for granted but actually provide the cream in the collaboration:
o??Make great new contacts
o??That turn into friends
o??People who often help us out in times of need
o??We get a sense of empowerment
o??We feel bigger than we are
o??We find unexpected people who compliment our skills
o??We are not alone
As you probably suspect these are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the myriad of benefits that can be acquired as part of a collaboration.
It may surprise you that people in the Collaboration Global community have discovered much bigger benefits of being in the community.
“because of this community I was able to speak and be reunited with my father after a 7 year separation. My children didn’t even know they had a grandfather. The relationship was healed”
“because of this community I am no longer a functioning alcoholic, 3 years sober”
“because of this community I was able to transition without fear of ridicule, I was accepted, loved”
“because of this community I am alive today”
Such astounding benefits occurred not because any of these people had been collaborating with a purpose to achieve monetary rewards, ( although one of them did get a £100,000 contract in the community) but because they came to a community with an aim to help others. The money from any collaboration paled into insignificance because of the new life each was able to lead as a direct result of what collaboration had taught them.

At Collaboration Global we don't just DO collaboration, we BE collaboration!
What does that mean?
Well, in a community where Collaboration* is one of our central values* we explore what it means to be collaboration. It is a mindset, or more accurately a ‘heartset’. We believe that by operating from a place of love, connection (to ourselves first, then others) and abundance we can be the essence of true collaboration. When values become aligned, our behaviours demonstrate the culture in the community. You will see people speaking from a place of Love*. We consider everyone equal, each member is a Human Being First* before any physical, cultural, social, biological differences, we see love as our default setting, followed swiftly by trust and respect. By giving these freely, rather than wait for someone to earn respect, ?we find they are swiftly reciprocated. By operating from these values our behaviour develops and communication becomes clearer, more supportive and positive.
There is no hierarchy, irrespective of any of our wonderful celebrated differences.
What mindset allows you to flourish in the world of collaboration?
We are still discovering the full impact of a positive mindset, this is an ongoing journey, but so far we have identified a generosity of spirit – as opposed to a spirit of generosity. Being aware that your presence or spirit, can positively impact someone’s learning, so being present, at a meeting or in the audience, listening to learn rather than to respond, creates a beautiful dynamic in the room. How you generate the positive energy in the room shows how you use your spirit to enhance another’s experience.
A sense of adventure always helps a collaboration to success. How else can you discover the hidden gems unless you are prepared to search unusual places? Being curious will also be invaluable in the team, a childlike curiosity and sense of wonder will maximise potential and see things that might otherwise have been hidden.
There is also value in allowing your vulnerability to show. It is ok to be human and admit you don’t understand, or you need help. Better that than bigger mistakes further down the road, so we all need to be aware it is ok for people to fail – it is only a stepping stone to success and provides masses of learning for everyone. It takes courage to be open and leave your ego at the door, but when you are a whole person you can see how powerful it is to step up into the unknown, try something new, stretch yourself and bring others along with you.
Whilst working with others we often need to be reminded to have a sense of fun. This is the oil that keeps the engine moving if some of the other mindsets are in short supply. Free thinking is also a huge asset to a team if there is an impasse as well as the opportunity to take a project to a whole new level that hadn’t been seen before.
Another mindset that is essential is to be creative. Not only within the skill sets for the project, but also with the relationships, especially if communication isn’t free flowing. If no one can own up to having a creative mind the collaboration may falter.
Now another benefit of collaboration has only just been fully experienced by me. Over the past 8 weeks I have been living alone for most of the week. We were in the process of moving one of our businesses and that meant my husband was working away from home Monday to Friday. I know it is absolutely nothing to the impact Covid has had on people having an imposed lockdown and yet it still did have an impact on me.
I was lonely.
Or more accurately, I felt how easy it would have been to allow myself to be lonely and potentially suffer mental ill health. There were certainly times I felt lost, alone, and dipped into a mini depression, needing a cry, wanting to shake myself out of it, but not being able to. Working alone and on occasion not speaking to another person all day – apart from email or text, it did feel isolating and energy sapping.
I did what I knew was my lifeline and contacted my community at Collaboration Global and was swiftly brought back to my reality. Even though they were not able to be in my house and give me a hug they KNEW me, they LOVED me and they were THERE for me.
If collaboration can do that in a small way, how great would it be if that was multiplied across our world?
I urge you to be part of something, be productive, be helpful, learn from others, discover your own strengths and share with others, be there when someone needs you and ask for help when it is your turn.
The community at Collaboration Global exists to support and promote others who already have this mindset and who want to be around people who also are dedicated to helping others. We want to magnify YOUR message and learn from you. In turn we want you to help us share our message too.
If you would like to learn more about how to collaborate AND discover the behaviours and mindset required to create amazing collaborations then join us for one of our monthly sessions and meet some of the people who held me up when I wasn’t strong enough to stand tall on my own.
After all, I know from experience – Collaboration is good for your health ??

3 年There is so much benefit in naturally becoming part of this tribe. The value you give and the benefits returned are different for everyone; it's as if the movement is organic and finds the best way to give what the members need.
