In one of my training sessions, one of the participants said ‘We don’t get credit of our performance. So, what is the point in working hard and putting that extra effort? This is a clear issue of mindset and not of the skill. Most of the employees would have such mindsets that would harm them and the organization.
Any kind of training would not benefit these employees except behavioural trainings. Behavioural trainings are about bringing a change in employee mindset that will help him perform better.
In this case, I told him ‘First of all, everyone in the corporate world is hired to do a great job. No one is hired for mediocracy.’ Appreciation is not easy to earn in corporate. So pat yourself on you back and reward yourself. Celebrate your success.
Second, if you give your 100%, you have a chance of growth. Your consistent high performance will surely get highlighted, you will get benefit out of it. But if don’t give your 100%, you don’t stand a chance. Also, you are losing opportunities to take new responsibilities learn and grow. You are not working on extending your horizon and limits.”
Third, achievement itself has self-satisfaction. These scientists and inventors rarely benefitted from their inventions. They were used by generations to come by. Inventor of computers cannot have used the computers the way we do. Working only for recognition and rewards is not the right mindset. All such discussions are possible only in a behavioural training session.
If an employee works with a mindset that his contribution is not recognized or rewarded, any kind of technical training will not improve his performance because the blockage is in his mind. His mindset needs to be changed. Mindset blocks are very common and we all carry it.
In one of my trainings, a manager got and challenged me, ‘You should not appreciate your subordinates, they will sit on your head’. If a manager is working with this mindset, expecting subordinates to be happy is too much of optimism.

In one of my training sessions, while sharing the importance of using time wisely, one of the participants told me ‘Watching news is not a waste of time. We come to know what is happening around the world’. I asked him ’How does it help you in your work, or improving your performance? How does watching news help you in earning increment and promotion? Some how we tend to believe that watching news is gaining knowledge.
In my previous article, I spoke about building relationship with your supervisor or manager and its importance. This is necessary for collaboration and, employee development and growth, for cordial and conducive environment for work.
Building right mindset that motivates performance is the key to employee and organization success. With a blocked mindset, any initiative taken by an organization would not be seen in the right sense and spirit.
Behavioural training helps organizations build right employee mindset.
Once organization has built right mindset, then employees will proactively take steps to learn, develop and grow making it easier for the organization grow and build a collaborative and pleasant work culture.
Thank you.
