Leading from inside out
Few circumstances so well demonstrate the excellence of the exercise of leadership as the image of an orchestra.
The conductor, no matter how experienced and skilled he may be, will never be skilled with all the instruments, much less able to play them all at the same time, and will therefore depend on the availability, effort, and dedication of each of the talented members of his orchestra.
Therefore, his role, is not to shine in the spotlight, but mainly to work behind the scenes, choosing the work that will be performed (mission) - how it will be performed (vision) - inviting suitable musicians, guiding and harmonizing their unique skills to present the best of them (high performance) to the audience (customers).
Then, in the public presentation, a leader must be humble to seek that the sparkle, the beauty, the results, are attributed to the whole team (the conductor included, of course) never to him alone.
