Why Such Basic Water Treatment?
Jimmy Lamb FISPE
Dryden Aqua Sales Manager and Immediate Past President of ISPE (Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers)
Why is it that all too often I come across pools that must have cost hundreds of thousands of pounds to build, then have the most basic of water treatment systems installed?
If I were fortunate enough to be able to afford the luxury of a good quality pool, I would expect the water treatment system to also be of a high standard. As a manufacturer of high quality cars, Lamborgini advertise their product as a ‘perfect fusion of technology & power’. Using a similar analogy, an excellent swimming pool could be described as the perfect fusion of construction & water quality! Luxury cars are purposely built using high quality components to ensure the best all round results are achieved. Rolls Royce declare their products are ‘trusted to deliver excellence’.
I’m sure that most customers looking to have a luxury pool built will also be familiar with experiencing luxury class vehicles and will undoubtedly have high expectations.
Selecting only basic pool water treatment for a high quality pool would be similar to selecting inferior components for building a luxury car: The whole package would then be seriously affected and almost certainly fall short of the customer’s expectations!
A valued customer, investing in a high quality swimming pool for relaxation and enjoyment, will surely expect it to deliver high quality pool water from a properly designed system. Today’s technologies offer pools that can be operated automatically with minimal maintenance using advanced and sophisticated equipment, including the all-important water treatment system. Modern well-designed equipment will provide excellent results and reliability compared to early automated systems; some of which fell short of expectations regarding pool water quality.
The selling of a high quality water treatment system to the customer should be easier than trying to convince them to upgrade a basic system once they become aware that the pool water quality is not up to their expectations! The whole package is important if the project is to be ‘trusted to deliver excellence’.
Therefore, at design stage, a pool specialist should aim to promote a filtration system which will maintain pool water of a high quality: In doing so, their customer can be assured that the total package will meet there expectations. Furthermore, there should opportunity for financial gain in the pool specialist’s favour for specifying and selling the better package.
Installing an appropriate system does not take away future service opportunities from the pool specialist either. On the contrary, a modern system can secure the life value of a new customer. Online monitoring capabilities allow the maintenance company to anticipate product servicing or replacement, enabling them to inform their customer in advance. Automatic notifications can alert the maintenance company of any alarm conditions too: These can often be rectified remotely, eliminating unnecessary call-out service visits.
From the outset, careful consideration should be given when selecting equipment for the pool water treatment. For optimum results, the design and specification needs to include:- suitably dimensioned filter(s); the best filter media; the best coagulant/flocculant; correctly sized pump(s) [ideally variable speed]; the right size pipework with correct number of inlets and returns, a good chemical dosing system, an automatic backwash system and high quality water treatment products.
I doubt very much that the customer will complain about the cost. In the grand scheme of things, it’s a small price for them to pay in order to experience consistent high quality pool water! They can be assured of an energy efficient, problem free pool with the safest, best water quality. The result for the pool specialist will be increased profitability and a happy customer. Happy customers are good customers who will recommend your products and services to all their friends and family.
In my experience, for the best water quality, DAISY+ is the system of choice. Developed by Marine Biologists (Dryden Aqua), the DAISY+ offers domestic pool owners the prospect of swimming in pool water of drinking water quality.
Should you need any assistance with selection of modern pool water treatment equipment, whatever category of pool project, we will be pleased to assist you.
