I am not particularly passionate about tennis, even though I know many are.?In fact, I was recently invited to tennis and a kindly declined, ?offering my spot to someone who would really appreciate it, but I am really interested in what makes great people tick.? So whilst I didn't want to watch Ash Barty play, I did want to understand what she did, and does, to be great.
- What tips, and tricks, does she have to stay motivated?
- How does she stay focussed?
- How does she fight and overcome the imposter within?
- How does she stay calm, and confident, in the face of criticism and so much noise!!
- How does she continue to innovate and learn?
This morning I listened to this Interview with Ben Crowe - The Drum and his work with Ash Barty.
His, and her, approach is simple to understand but difficult to implement.
Here is my interpretation of his top tips:
- Manage your expectations. Make sure they are your expectations and not imposed by others.?Finally, check for realism.
- Focus on what you can control – you cannot control the weather or other people. Focus your efforts on where you can have maximum impact.
- Separate you the person versus you the persona, especially the persona that others create for you. You are not your talents, titles, net wealth or your fame. You are a person first, not your titles and descriptors.
- Your worth and value in the world is not based on your achievements.?You are not your success or your failures.?Losing a tennis match or not closing a sale does not make you useless or incompetent and whilst it might mean you need to make more effort in the future, it does not mean you are a failure as a person.
- Focus human being not human doing
- Accept yourself, warts and all!!!
- Don’t get caught up with other people’s stories about themselves or you.?You have the opportunity to write your own story so take it, don’t hand it to others
