Why is Artificial Intelligence Important?

Can a machine imitate a person? This is a problem that society has been struggling with for a long time. It has served as the subject of numerous science fiction books and films. Artificial intelligence refers to a machine's capacity for perception, learning, problem-solving, and other activities. What makes this technology so crucial? Ten reasons follow:

AI can decrease human error

AI has the potential to drastically reduce errors when properly programmed. Consider medical mistakes as an example. A report by Miguel Paredes from 2018 showed that AI could predict, with 78% accuracy, whether a sepsis patient will pass away 30 days after being discharged from the intensive care unit. AI can't get tired or stressed out like people can, but it can't replace human intuition and expertise.

AI can perform hazardous tasks

One of the riskiest jobs in the world is the gathering and sorting of trash. Garbage collectors are twice as likely to encounter stomach issues than the overall workforce, according to a Danish study. Infections, allergies, and back problems also affect them. Robots powered by AI can lessen the risk to people. Some recycling facilities have cutting-edge trash-sorting robots. Cans, glass, and plastic are all recognized as recyclable by the computer systems, which are trained to pull them out of waste heaps.

AI facilitates repetitive tasks

Even if sorting cans and glass was completely safe for humans, it would rapidly become monotonous. For humans, who live for creativity, this type of labor is boring and commonplace. Repetitive jobs can be challenging for humans to focus on, which leaves room for error. AI-powered machines never grow bored, always do a task the same manner, and maintain focus.

AI is always accessible.

AI is capable of performing tasks continuously, unlike humans. This is especially helpful for helplines and other customer service areas, a significant market for AI solutions. A study found that the IBM Watson Assistant saved money and freed up agents to focus more time on crucial tasks when utilized in conjunction with human agents. Always-available AI chatbots will only get more efficient as technology progresses.

AI is more efficient than humans.

For companies like NASA, new technologies can expedite procedures and decision-making. Evana Gizzi, a Pathways intern in 2021, created Artificial Intelligence Research for Spacecraft Resilience (RAISR). RAISR allowed AI to swiftly identify issues with spacecraft and spaceflight systems. It works by combining traditional AI methods with machine learning to discover connections that humans are unable to. The efficiency of a mission would increase if the fault diagnosis process was sped up.

AI is very important in social media.

The most downloaded app in the world, TikTok, makes use of machine learning. A few well-known videos welcome users when they launch the app for the first time. The algorithm locates related videos utilizing information like hashtags, noises, language, and captions based on what the user interacts with. TikTok maps user preferences into "clusters" of persons and videos once it has accumulated enough data. The algorithm presents new videos based on these clusters using machine learning. Unfortunately, this brings up concerns about extremism and radicalization, which is still another justification for the significance of AI in social media.

AI helps in learning

Popular language-learning app DuoLingo employs AI in a number of ways, including in a machine-learning system known as Birdbrain. Birdbrain modifies the level of difficulty within a lesson depending on how a user is performing. If a user constantly makes mistakes, the difficulty level will be lowered in the app. The software will pose a harder question if the user correctly answers all the questions. The software can start providing customized, AI-generated lessons after a user has finished five to six sessions, giving them a more tailored experience. Personalization will improve along with technology.

AI will impact the labor market.

Although there is a lot of worry about robots taking over jobs, the truth is a little more nuanced. The World Economic Forum projects that automation will result in 58 million new jobs. One-third of the affected positions will be lower skilled, while two-thirds of them will become better skilled. It's also possible that AI will only integrate employment rather than completely replace them. For trucker fleets, one startup, Samsara, developed AI Dash Cams. The cameras included AI that could tell if a motorist wasn't donning a COVID mask. Although AI might not replace humans, it might watch them.

AI may have effects on human rights.

The OHCHR released a report in 2020 that examined how AI may affect many rights, including the right to privacy and the right to travel and peaceful assembly. The Rule of Law and Democracy Section's human rights officer, Tim Engelhardt, described it as "dire." The issue is the rapid adoption of AI as well as the skewed datasets that AI is based on. When AI is developed with bias, it has negative effects on people that are already marginalized.

Making "good AI" is challenging.

AI is only as effective as the software that humans create. And what exactly is "good"? Is AI the only thing achieving certain objectives? It's not always obvious what the objectives should be. Consider autonomous vehicles as an example. All of us want these to be secure. But that can result in vehicles that go too slowly and abruptly stop for objects like plastic bags. We need to solve the complexity of what constitutes a worthy objective before we can have good AI.
