Why Apple chose carbon fiber as its roof material？
A major feature of the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple's headquarters in California is the roof made of carbon fiber material. The entire roof has a diameter of about 47 meters and weighs 80 tons, making it the largest carbon fiber roof in the world.
Apple uses carbon fiber materials to make the roof in order to make the roof as light and thin as possible and present a visual effect of floating in the air. Therefore, the glass structure of the theater's exterior wall can withstand the weight of the roof and ensure that the structure is stable and strong, presenting the effect of the roof floating.
The circular roof is composed of 44 fan-shaped panels about 21 meters long and 3 meters wide, which are spliced around a circular hub structure. Such a splicing structure completely removes the steel structure and directly uses carbon fiber panels as the?roof shell. At the same time, the splicing structure is easy to transport and install.
Application advantages
1. Reinforced concrete is one of the most used building materials in the world, but its production relies on intensive resources and produces pollution. In contrast, carbon fiber concrete is four times lighter (due to the reduction of structural parts) and four times harder, so it can greatly reduce resource consumption.
2. The architect used carbon fiber composite materials to strengthen the building's earthquake resistance and transformed it into a public facility for community communication. Usually, people use iron components to strengthen wooden buildings against earthquakes, but the weight of iron components will in turn weaken the building's earthquake resistance. In contrast, carbon fiber weighs only one twentieth of iron, has stronger tensile strength than iron, and has a softer texture. In recent years, more and more traditional wooden buildings will choose to use it for reinforcement in this project.
