Why am I Stuck in Groundhog Day?
I had to force myself to start writing this on a Monday morning even though I’ve been planning this post for a while but i was waiting until I "felt" like doing it, and the inspiration would come from there.....but it doesn't; motion creates emotion and that’s what this article is about.
When people ask me "Jerrell, what do you do?" my response is essentially the same:
"I take people from where they are, to where they want to be."
Quite a simple concept, but execution is not easy. Everyone has dreams, that they “will follow one day", but most people just stay where they are and wait for others to decide what their life will be... until it’s too late. That was easy to do when we had excuses; responsibilities, appointments, OT, commitments, and the belief it will "just happen". Now 2020 has come along and made many of us see how fragile all of that is, it's an easy way of distracting from doing what needs to be done to get to where (and what) we want.
That nagging voice, that feeling, the part that feels not right?
How about feeling anxious and uncertain, when it's only Sunday night?
That is the thing that matters, its yourself saying "this is not quite right",
How do we know what to listen to, and let it be our light?
This could be a really long article, but we are not doing that today. I will just summarize the process, and break it down in later posts.
When I (and likely you) get that feeling that I am just a bit stuck, there is often the tendency to ignore it and continue as I am. There is an autopilot mode that allows us to endure it, some of us can go for years doing work we hate. Especially when making a "good living"- right salary, right role, things others would envy; we know we have no right to complain because others are doing far worse.
So because your culture says doing well, does that mean you shouldn’t do better? The truth is that the only thing no person can buy/make/save/ or waste is our scarily finite time. The lock-downs and general slowdown of everything have made that fact clearer than ever... so what on earth can we do about it and what can anyone do?
So how do you start getting to where you want (and ought) to be, before it is too late?
(note: if you’re happy where you are; doing your best work while living your best life, then congratulations and keep going- just forward this to someone who isn’t)
Simply put- Answer these 3 questions:
What?
What do you want? What do you not? Define those times, places, actions, and successes that made you feel alive. If they drove you before, they will do you in future, and are probably the activities/work that fit you best. Don’t worry now if they’re practical, crazy or even exist. Every job, product, or company that is now didn’t exist before; some lunatic was just mad enough to do it anyway and find a way to make it fit.
Why?
Why do you want this? Why would you change? If its not important enough, then you have failed before you start. Will it help you be happier? Perhaps bring in more cash? Write down your reasons before you start because the why will be the only thing that keeps you going when reality kicks you in the face (I promise it will, over and over again…it doesn't stop kicking, you will just become immune)
When?
When does this need to happen? When can it? What needs to be in place for your transition, and how do you make that happen? Most of us have excuses that tell us the timing isn’t right, the only way to know is to get started. You don’t know anything until you actually know. If timing isn’t an issue, then what exactly is stopping you? Either you’re making an excuse, or you need to go back to why because you probably don’t really want it.
I'll pause here for now, as we're only getting started; the how and who are written, but you don't need to worry about yet. I’d like to hear from you on breakdown in future articles, leave a comment or send me a message with where you want to focus.
2020 is almost over, don't let it end the way it started out.
